With little over one month till Making Tax Digital transforms the lives of eCommerce retailers, we spoke to multi-channel eCommerce software program professional Expandly about what Making Tax Digital means for online sellers and why it is perhaps the push that eCommerce business house owners want.

What's MTD?
Making Tax Digital (also known as MTD) is a government initiative to streamline and digitalise tax.

From mollie addison , eCommerce businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold (£85,000) will probably be required to:

- Keep certain financial information in a digital format; and - File VAT returns electronically using MTD-enabled software program.

From April 2020, it's hoped that the success of part one will result in:
- Quarterly digital reporting of monetary information; and - Filing of different taxes using MTD-enabled software program (e.g. company tax).

What MTD means to your eCommerce enterprise
In case your eCommerce enterprise is VAT-registered, you will need to make modifications as to the way you retailer and report financial info. Specifically, you will need to:

1. Keep monetary data digitally
Certain financial records (you'll find an inventory here) have to be stored and maintained in a digital format.

2. Use MTD-enabled software program
Information must be despatched to and acquired from HMRC via MTD-enabled software program (including the submission of tax returns). A listing of authorised software will be discovered here. Although free software is offered, the transaction limitations are restrictive for many eCommerce companies - which is why most are choosing reasonably priced cloud solutions such as Xero.

3. Create a digital hyperlink
Once your monetary data are in a digital format, they should stay in a digital format - with no handbook dealing with or copying and pasting. eCommerce companies should, therefore, digitally link their invoice information from their sales channels into their MTD-enabled software. This can be achieved through the use of multi-channel eCommerce software program (similar to Expandly) which integrates your sales channels to mechanically send sales orders to Xero (and in bulk to keep away from Xero’s transaction limits).

Why MTD is the push eCommerce wants
eCommerce business house owners already have so much on their plate - and now they have to grapple with more laws and new software - not splendid. But, at Expandly, we consider that MTD is an opportunity for eCommerce business house owners to embrace new know-how and the advantages that come with it, including:

1. Accurate data
Keeping your information in a digital format leads to fewer typos, miscalculations and oversights. You've a more accurate overview of your monetary scenario and gross sales knowledge, and you keep away from penalties and fines for the incorrect reporting of knowledge.
