Apple just posted a press release boasting that its increasingly popular App Store completely demolished existing sales records on New Years Day.
By the time the dust settled, customers on January 1 purchased $240 million worth of apps, marking a new one-day record and once more affirming that Apple as a services company is a force to be reckoned with.
2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with January 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store, Phil Schiller said in a press release.
We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people s lives.
Bolstered of course by Nintendo s wildly popular Super Mario Run — which saw 40 million downloads in just a few days after its release — Apple also revealed that App Store customers during the month of December cumulatively spent a whopping $3 billion on apps, itself a new App Store record.
And speaking to how Apple s App Store continues to grow at a rapid clip, Apple disclosed that developers in 2016 earned $20 billion in revenue from the App Store, a marked 40% increase from 2015.
