The good news is the movement of people who harvest that excess home-grown food, known as urban gleaning, has matured over the past decade or so from a weekend hobby for locavores to a growing sector of the food economy.More than 10 organizations from places as far flung as Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Tucson spent two days sharing information, strategy, and stories about building the urban gleaning movement around the U.S.Among the participants were volunteer computer scientists from Boulder, Colorado, who have created an online map that’s logged 1.2 million of the world’s edible (and gleanable) plants; a couple of guys from Atlanta who turned their old-fashioned southern music jamboree cider fest into a gleaning organization; and a Salt Lake City organization that transformed a 35-foot school bus into an educational greenhouse and gleaning organization.“Before we can finish our pitch, [fruit tree owners] are already like, ‘just take it, take [the fruit] away,’” said Craig Durkin, co-founder and board member of Atlanta’s Concrete Jungle.“They are tired of the rotting fruit and flies that often arrive when a tree produces way more than they can handle.”There is a similar story being told in Utah.

LG may be shaking up the look of its most premium phone.A new rumor says that the LG V30, the unannounced follow-up to last year's LG V20, may have more in common with the LG G6 than with the V20 itself.Renderings that come from well known mobile tipster OnLeaks suggest that the V30 will lose the secondary display above the phone's main screen and adopt the superslim bezels of the G6 (also a big hit on the Samsung Galaxy S8).The video also shows features we expect, like dual rear cameras (also used in the V20), a rear fingerprint sensor and a USB-C port. The phone is also said to have a 6-inch display, and will launch on August 31 at the IFA 2017 trade show in Berlin.Keep in mind that these renders are not from LG, so nothing's official just yet.

Intel's Optane 3D XPoint drives could be doomed to fail in the mass market because their performance and endurance advantages over 3D NAND SSDs are "nominal".So claims Wikibon CTO David Floyer in a report that looks at Optane's performance and endurance advantages over 3D Flash by comparing Intel's 32GB Optane Series PCIe M.2 2280 Memory Module and Toshiba's 3D NAND-based XG5 M.2 drive. The Optane M.2 drive was a whopping four times faster than the XG5.However, the XG5's performance can be increased by putting a DRAM cache in front of it with, for example, hybrid DRAM-3D NAND NVDIMMs, says Floyer, who said that would be less expensive than using Optane NVDIMMs.Similarly the 2280 has better endurance than the XG5.However, Floyer notes that 3D NAND drives can be over-provisioned to boost endurance, and, at least in Floyer's view, this will be less expensive than buying Optane drives.

The Essential phone, via Android godfather Andy Rubin, made a lot of promises. An unbloated Android experience, fast updates, and, perhaps most important, a bezel-less screen that rivals both the Galaxy S8 and the still coming iPhone 8.We’re now on day 33 without an Essential in any buyer’s hands, which doesn’t bode well for a very ambitious first try.To be fair, shipping delays aren’t uncommon in this market. But when you make such a bold promise to launch a very bold phone, you better make sure you stick to schedule as close as you can.Essential, however, has essentially gone silent on that front.

After last month's Petya/NotPetya ransomware outbreak you may be feeling like the next global attack could come at any moment. And don't forget angst about power grid hacks.Reports this week revealed that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security are scrambling to defend multiple US energy companies and manufacturing plants from hackers—including a nuclear power plant in Kansas. So far there's no evidence that hackers have accessed the industrial control systems that actually direct physical equipment, so it's not a doomsday scenario yet, but from an anxiety perspective it's not great.Meanwhile, North Korea demonstrated on Tuesday (US Independence Day) that it is capable of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile, bringing the reclusive nation one step closer to possessing nuclear weapons that could directly threaten the continental US or pretty much any other part of the world.Who knows what the next six months hold.

Jason Stein, the CEO of Cycle and founder of agency Laundry Service, joined members of Digiday+ on Thursday for a Slack town hall.We discussed the challenges of building a media company out of an agency, why influencer marketing has its issues and more.Digiday holds Slack town halls every two weeks, and in between, we’ll have editorial chats and group discussions on industry topics. Here’s what you missed from our chat with Stein. We’re building media brands because agencies (branded content and distribution, to be specific) are the best way to monetize and happen to have a pretty good background in doing those things. So, we need to build media brands faster than media companies can build agencies.”

"Game of Thrones" involves a massive web of characters, intersecting plot lines and far-flung places.UK digital agency Catch is trying to help us keep track of all the madness with a Facebook Messenger chatbot called GoTBot.You can ask it for background on characters, find out who's dead or alive or have it tell you silly "Game of Thrones"-themed jokes.GoTBot isn't afraid to be irreverent.Ask what's up with Cersei and Jamie and it delivers a GIF of actor Peter Dinklage giving a euphemistic description of their incestuous relationship. It's also not afraid to go on tangents by serving up photos of Jon Snow as a teenager.

Despite their empire falling more than 1,500 years ago, the Roman recipe for concrete remains stronger than anything around today. And it's all thanks to seawater.Roman concrete combined volcanic ash, lime, volcanic rock and seawater. That final ingredient, it turns out, is key.The unusual combination of ingredients actually gets stronger as new minerals form over millennia. To make the breakthrough, researchers at the department of energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory made micron-level X-ray studies of samples of Roman concrete from ancient piers and breakwaters.

The Air Opus makes that setup much easier. There is nothing like camping in the great outdoors during a holiday weekend, but going outside does not have to mean leaving certain amenities behind.Campers allow owners to bring a little bit of civilization with them, but the setup can be tiresome after a long journey.Using Air Pole technology, the Air Opus camper inflates its canopy in less than 90 seconds, leaving owners with more time to actually enjoy the campsite.A small electric pump inside the camper activates with a simple flip of the switch. When it is time to go, deflating is just as easy.

Fighting to head off Department of Defense blacklistingThe company is moving to try and head off budget legislation which, as we wrote last week, would shut Kaspersky out of American military contracts. The US Senate committee that's proposed the ban cites concerns about the company's alleged links to the Russian government.Visiting Australia in May for the CeBIT conference, Kaspersky said he was willing to let the US look through his company's products' source code, and in an interview with the Associated Press over the weekend reiterated the offer.Speaking at his Moscow HQ, Kaspersky said: "If the United States needs, we can disclose the source code," adding that he's prepared to testify to US lawmakers if needed. He also claimed that unnamed government agencies – not necessarily Russian – had tried to gauge his interest in moving from defensive research to offensive, but he said: "I don't even want to talk about it."

The Government's anti-terror surveillance powers are being threatened by a legal challenge after the High Court granted permission for a judicial review of the Investigatory Powers Act.The High Court has agreed to the human rights group Liberty's request for part of the controversial law, dubbed by critics as the "Snoopers' Charter", to be challenged with a judicial review. The challenge will focus on three powers outlined in the act that grant the security services' widespread surveillance abilities: the permission to hack into computers, the mass interception and collection of communications data, and the acquisition of personal data sets from companies and organisations. The hearing will go ahead if Liberty's application for a costs cap is granted, the group said.Force internet and communications companies to retain customers’ browser history for up to a yearProtect the ability of GCHQ and MI5 to bulk collect communications data and to hack in to a suspect’s electronic devices

Receiving toxic comments from strangers (or even people we know) is a risk most of us take when using social media. With a focus on photo and video sharing, Instagram is one of the worst offenders when it comes to this sort of behavior, but now it’s using AI to tackle the problem.Late last year, the Facebook-owned company introduced the option to filter out words from users’ comments sections, and even hide entire comments containing words or phrases flagged as inappropriate.Yesterday, Instagram announced a few improvements to the system, which will now be turned on by default.“Many of you have told us that toxic comments discourage you from enjoying Instagram and expressing yourself freely,” wrote Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom.“To help, we’ve developed a filter that will block certain offensive comments on posts and in live video.”

Good news for "Sense8," the Netflix sci-fi series from J.
