p If you've wondered how hate proliferates online, especially since the divisive 2016 election, ProPublica has some answers.Cloudflare, a San Francisco-based internet company, enables extremist web sites to stay in business by providing them with data delivery services, according to ProPublica. The company also turns over contact information of anyone who complains about a hate site to the site's operators. That policy has exposed people complaining about online hate to personal harassment, ProPublica reported.ProPublica cited a 2013 blog post by CEO Matthew Price that said the company didn't have an obligation to monitor the websites that use its services.Cloudflare lawyer Doug Kramer told Propublica that the company turned over the names of complainants because it is "base constitutional law that people can face their accusers."
p NASA wants scientific computer experts to take a look at one of its oldest software suites in the hope they can speed it up.The code in question is called "FUN3D" and was first developed in the 1980s.It's still an important part of the agency's computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capability, and had its most recent release in September 2016.The agency is now sponsoring a competition with the aim of getting it to go at least 10 times faster. If you can crank it up to ten thousand times faster – without any loss of accuracy – all the better.Michael Hetle, program executive at NASA's Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program (TACP) explains that “some concepts are just so complex, it’s difficult for even the fastest supercomputers to analyse these models in real time.
p Some Google Docs users were hit with a very convincing, very real-looking phishing email today that some, unfortunately, fell for.The email claimed that someone had shared a document with the Google user, who would then click on the link and be taken to a real Google page to select their Gmail account.Choosing the account, though, led to a fishy page that requested access to the user’s account, and it only got worse from there. An alert about the phishing email came from a Redditor who posted a full write up about the email and how it works to the social website. While many phishing emails are easy to spot, this one is quite the opposite, and it’s easy to see how someone less familiar with the Internet would fall for the scam. Those who do fall for the phishing email ultimately end up giving the scammers access to their address book and email.
p SpaceX today said its planned constellation of 4,425 broadband satellites will launch from the Falcon 9 rocket beginning in 2019 and continue launching in phases until reaching full capacity in 2024.SpaceX gave the Senate Commerce Committee an update on its satellite plans during a broadband infrastructure hearing this morning via testimony by VP of satellite government affairs Patricia Cooper.Satellite Internet access traditionally suffers from high latency, relatively slow speeds, and strict data caps. But as we reported in November, SpaceX says it intends to solve these problems with custom-designed satellites launched into low-Earth orbits.SpaceX mentioned 2019 as a possible launch date in an application filed with the Federal Communications Commission in November and offered a more specific launch timeline today.Later this year, SpaceX will begin the process of testing the satellites themselves, launching one prototype before the end of the year and another during the early months of 2018.
p Whose fault was it?We have a pretty good IkeaA fat-fingered human accidentally broke a transatlantic internet backbone that knackered Cloudflare's content delivery network in the US.Cloudflare – which props up loads of big names online – said that over the course of about fifteen minutes on Tuesday morning, it suffered a slowdown in traffic, meaning connections to websites were hampered. The issue was first reported around 0745 Pacific Time (1445 UTC) with a fix deployed to defuse the situation by 0759, and the problems declared fully resolved by 0853."The issue is related to a specific transit provider and we are working on temporarily disabling this provider to route around the issue," Cloudflare said at the time.
Despite his company’s litany of problems, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was supposed to appear onstage at Code Conference, a fancy tech gathering, at the end of May.It would have been a good time for the yelling executive to weigh in on the allegations of sexual harassment at his company, the ongoing investigation into those claims, the assorted lawsuits Uber faces from its competitors, and the fact that tons of high-profile employees—even PR flacks—are headed for the exit. But from Kalanick’s perspective, it could present an opportunity to try to shift the prevailing narrative about the current state of the company, or put forth an argument for why he should remain as CEO to a ballroom full of industry folk.Instead, according to an Uber spokesperson, he won’t be able deliver his musings because of “the delay of the Holder review.” (The “Holder review” to which the spokesperson refers is former Attorney General Eric Holder’s investigation into claims of a company culture marred by sexual harassment.)In fact, as authors (and Code conference creators) Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg noted in their announcement, this cancelation is actually unprecedented for the Code conference (and its predecessor, the All Things D conference):Microsoft’s Bill Gates came despite the Vista disaster; Apple’s Steve Jobs came despite the stolen iPhone prototype debacle; various Yahoo chiefs came despite heaps of bad publicity and takeover rumors; Steve Case came soon after the utter humiliation of AOL’s failed merger with Time Warner.

Want to run Android, but don't want to buy a smartphone, tablet or Android TV device? Then this may be the answer to your prayers: Google has teamed up with Huawei to deliver the HiKey 960, a Raspberry Pi style computer board that runs Android.Developed with teams at Google, ARM, Huawei, Archermind, and LeMaker, it was made primarily so that Android developers could code on a device using an ARM based chip like so many of the devices that run Android apps, rather than on Intel x86 chips. But while it's based primarily at developers, there's nothing stopping anyone running it as a straight Android computer. It's a powerful board too, in line with the top-end performance of Android's big smartphone hitters. The HiKey 960 has a Huawei Kirin 960 octa-core chip, which makes use of four high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 and four efficient Cortex-A53 cores.

WOOLWICH, Maine – Dan Harrington makes his living unearthing marine worms by hacking away at mudflats with a tool that resembles the business end of an old steel rake."A bad day is when you try out five, six different spots and don't even make enough money to replenish the gas that you put in your tank."A mysterious drop in the harvest of two of the most popular worms for sport fishermen is proving expensive for anglers, perilous for bait shop owners and a threat to a way of life in Maine. An October study in the journal Fish and Fisheries said bloodworms are the most valuable marine worm species on the retail bait market, and sandworms aren't far behind. But the worm falloff has disrupted the supply chain.Maine's catch of bloodworms has dropped from more than 600,000 pounds in 2004 to less than half that last year.
This is the fourth post of “Now in Vietnam“, where TechNode visits Vietnam’s leading companies, to explore the next startup ecosystem to emerge among Southeast Asian countries.Vietnam GDP growth could surpass China by 2020 according to Turicum Investment Management. The cream of the US$ 215 million-sized Vietnam’s mobile gaming market is coming from these three demographics of gamers: A teenage male student, business man over 30s, and an office girl in the 20s, according to SohaGame. Now is the time for global game companies to enter the Vietnam market, otherwise it will be too late to skim the cream. The volume of Vietnam mobile game market in 2016 was US$ 215 million, an increase of 18% YoY but strongly decreased in comparing the growth rate of 52.5% in 2015.The market will reach to the saturated point in 2019 with around US$ 295 million, according to Vietnam Mobile game market report 2016 released by GameK.According to the report, there were 216 new mobile games released in 2016, up 51% compared to 2015 (143 new games), meaning there were almost 2 new games released every 3 days. Also, 35% of newly released games shut down their service right in the first year.Vietnam will stay as a promising game market in the SE Asia region, but the competition will get fiercer, as Hieu Ha Trung, business director of SohaGame puts it, “the market is not open to everyone like 2 or 3 years ago.” SohaGame is one of the top 2 mobile game publishers in Vietnam based on the number of new games released in 2016, with more than 23 released games.Hieu Ha Trung, co-founder and business director of SohaGame served in the Ho Chi Minh-based company over six years and helped its mobile games like Socvui.com reach its highest peak visits.

The funding spree continues in China’s bike-rental sector.Bike-rental startup ofo announced over the weekend that it raised an undisclosed amount in its Series D from Alibaba’s financial arm Ant Financial.Under the deal, ofo cooperate with Ant Financial in the fields of e-payment, credit system and globalization process. The announcement came less than two months after the bike-rental startup secured a US$450 million series D in March, which the company said was the largest amount in a single funding round in the sector.Prior to the new funding round, ofo had already struck a strategic cooperation deal last month with Sesame Credit, the social credit scoring system developed by Ant Financial, allowing Shanghai ofo users with a Sesame Credit score of 650 or higher can register on the app without making the RMB 99 deposit.Ant Financial CEO Jing Xiandong said the company will set an example for the bike-rental sector through this cooperation with ofo, and fully unleash their potential in the mobile platform, credit management, online payment, risk management and safety control. It is no wonder ofo chooses to team up with Ant Financial, which is the operator of Alipay and other Alibaba-backed financial services, while ofo’s arch rival Mobike has worked closely with WeChat (Mobike’s bike-rental feature was added to WeChat Wallet last month). In China’s third-party online payment, Alipay and WeChat Payment remain the top two players, each with a 54.1% and 37.02% share in the fourth quarter of 2016.Dai Wei earlier revealed the company is worth US$ 2 billion, takes in over RMB 10 million in revenue a day, and will hopefully turn a profit this year.

The FCC is permitting reduced competition between service providers to spur investment, but that could mean small businesses end up paying more.Small businesses may end up paying more for their broadband internet service thanks to a ruling made yesterday, April 20, by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC voted to introduce a new standard that can classify local markets as being competitive, even if only one provider is available.Home internet is not subject to price caps, but the FCC does put restrictions on the cost of broadband access provided to businesses by the likes of AT and Verizon, according to a report from Ars Technica. These connections are used for facilitating the use of credit card readers and ATMs, maintaining links with other branches, and for all the more common forms of internet usage.Yesterday’s decision decrees that price caps will be nullified if 50 percent of potential customers in a given county are within half a mile of a location that’s served by a competitive provider.
The US military appears to be flirting with the idea of an invasion, one that would surely result in countless deaths and an indeterminate period of chaos on the peninsula.Nobody seems to know the name of the song or the exact reason why it’s played every day, but everyone seems to be in agreement about how goddamn unsettling it would be to hear this horror movie music on the way to work.According to Wikipedia—perhaps the least reliable source of information on North Korea—the song is called “Ten Million Human Bombs for Kim Il Sung.” An alternate translation might be “Ten Million Will Become Human Bombs.” Either way, the song is dark as fuck. You can find the song pretty easily on YouTube. There are a handful of recordings uploaded over the course of the past few years, and this fact might lead you to wonder if it’s a trick. After all, it’s not hard to find some grim footage of Pyongyang, lay some slow devil music over it, and upload the video with a title like, “Morning in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Google's connected speaker is getting an anticipated update Thursday.Google Home will now support multiple Google accounts and tell the difference between users' voices. That means you'll be able to get customized answers for every Google user in your house. It's a small, but significant update. One of the big weaknesses with connected speakers like Google Home and Amazon Echo is that it's difficult to switch accounts. That means just one person's calendar, email, messages, music playlists, and more on a device the entire household is supposed to share.Google's new update solves the problem. Here's how it worksAfter setting up individual accounts using the Google Home companion app for iPhone or Android (update coming soon), the Home speaker will link each account to a user with voice recognition. Then, when you use the wake phrase "OK, Google" and ask a question or give a command, Home will deliver personalized responses for that account.Google says the voice recognition happens on the device, which should help alleviate concerns that Google is keeping tabs on your voice patterns. Why this mattersGoogle Home is an important piece of Google's overall strategy to leverage its expertise in voice control, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.Home is powered by Google Assistant, the new digital helper that can be found on Google's Pixel phones and new Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8.Google CEO Sundar Pichai is especially bullish on the prospects of voice and AI as keys to the future of computing, but hasn't detailed how the company plans to monetize those ambitions as more people move to screen-free computing where they can't see the digital ads the company makes most of its money from. Here's a video demo:Get the latest Google stock price here.NOW WATCH: 7 Google Maps tricks only power users know aboutLoading video...
