Reduce, re-use, and recycle are words to live by as we try to minimise humanity’s demand for our planet’s natural resources. But instead of sending your empty soda bottles off to be recycled, scientists from the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany want you to build everything from chairs, to boats, to outdoor shelters with them. But building things with oddly-shaped plastic bottles isn’t as easy as making things with lumber, bricks, or even plastic toys, and the last thing you’d want to do is set sail in a soda bottle boat held together by tape.So to turn plastic bottles into a genuinely useful building material, the scientists from the Hasso Plattner Institute developed a piece of software called TrussFab, detailed in a paper here, that allows 3D models and designs to be automatically converted into pop bottle structures. Not only does the TrussFab software automatically calculate how many empty soda bottles you’ll need to build something real, it’s able to calculate the stresses and loads your structure will be subjected to, intelligently engineering and reinforcing the design so that a soda bottle chair, for example, can actually support a 180-pound human sitting on it.Instead of tape or glue, the TrussFab software’s creations are held together with custom plastic connectors that are small enough to be produced on a desktop 3D printer.

About 25 news actions have landed on Google Home for Google Assistant including an action to hear the sounds of hundreds of bird songs and one that transforms into the person in your office who says innocuous, buzzword-laden things in meetings.More than 175 actions have been made available on the Google Home app since the launch of the Actions on Google platform last December.Actions are the voice apps third party developers can create for Google Assistant. In recent weeks, the third party ecosystem of actions has grown to include a WikiHow action for thousands of DIY instructions and a Bible reader that can read scripture based on how you feel. The Bird Song Skill from Thomptronics can play more than two hundred bird sounds, from a wild turkey to half a dozen swan species to the Veery, which is said to have one of the most beautiful bird songs in all of North America.Without the need of any action, Google Assistant can tell you what a swan or hummingbird sound like but it cannot tell you about a grey wagtail or a black browed albatross. If you get especially good at your ability to recognize the birds, Bird Song Skill has a song quiz.I can’t wait for an action like this to take into account my location so you learn the sounds of birds in your immediate surroundings.Continuing a trend of actions made for public transit times in major cities, the Atlanta rail action was recently made available to tell Atlanta metro area residents about the next bus or train arrival time.Another noteworthy new action is The Virtual Concierge. The action (and its accompanying Alexa skill) were made by Dana Young for guests staying at The Lodge in Palmer Lake, Wash. By saying “Talk to the virtual concierge,” a vacation rental or Airbnb guest can be told about house rules, or ask questions about things like the Wi-Fi password, nearby restaurant recommendations, and a range of other things a property may want a guest to know.A large part of the new batch of actions is related to characters and storytelling.Value Adder is an action that mimics the innocuous things people say in business settings like “The key takeaway here is that we need to collaboratively pursue collective synergy” or “If you ask me i think we should continually develop scalable niches.” To call on the action, say “OK, Google, ask Value Adder to add value to this meeting.”The Misfortunate Cookie action will tell you about mild misfortunes like someone blocking your way to escalator, kids with sticky hands, or soggy fries.

Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of United States on November 8, 2016 in a culmination of an explosive, populist and polarizing campaign centered around the phrase, “Make America Great Again.” Now that the surprise from this outcome has set in, the tech world is keen to learn more about the measures Mr. President is putting forward. There are non-immigrant visas that allow companies to employ foreign workers for up to six years.Incentivizing Companies To Employ AmericansThough the main aim of the H-1B program was to supplement the U.S. workforce in areas where they were not skilled, that hasn't always been the case.In some instances, Americans were simply replaced by foreign workers because non-Americans were willing to take lower salaries.New guidelines issued earlier this month were a first step in what Trump has indicated will be a radical overhaul, and this week's executive order calls for further review of the program.

Last summer, a team of geologists set out on an expedition to study Slims River in the Yukon, but when they got there, the once majestic river was nowhere to be seen. The scientists attribute the missing river to a retreating glacier, which caused a dramatic shift in the direction of water flow. It’s yet another example of climate change affecting our planet in unexpected ways. For the past century, the massive Kaskawulsh Glacier in northern Canada has been steadily retreating, but as documented in a study led by the University of Washington Tacoma, this retreat has now resulted in a rare geological phenomenon known as “river piracy.”Until recently, meltwater collected near the toe, or leading tip, of the glacier, was directed towards the Slim River and then into the Bering Sea.But thanks to rising temperatures, the glacier has retreated to such an extent that meltwater is now flowing towards the Kaskaulsh River and into the Gulf of Alaska.

The MaxOak K2 is an impressive piece of kit that’s worth every penny for the target audience. Its 50Ah capacity will ensure that business laptops can run for days without needing to charge at a plug socket. As expected, the K2 is built like a brick, measuring 207 x 136 x 33mm, and at nearly 1.28kg, isn’t far off the weight of a brick – it’s certainly heavier than most new ultraportable laptops (like the Toshiba X20W-D).KayoMaxtar opted for a metal finish which gives a nice premium feel to the device, but it’s slippery on some surfaces, so gets some self-adhesive plastic feet. All connectors, status lights and the power button are located on one side. There’s one power-in socket, four white LED lights that give a rough idea of how much juice the battery currently holds, an oversized power button, a 12V@2.5A output, another 20V@3A output, and four full-size USB ports (two at 2.1A and two at 1A).

The world of cybercrime increasingly resembles the standard business world, made up of many illegal schemes that depend on groups of specialists working across various projects. The traditional meeting place for these has been, and continues to be, online messaging boards or web forums.Once criminals have met they often then move their communications outside of the forum for a number of reasons -- even if the forums have native private messaging platforms. One reason for that is criminals can never be quite sure exactly who is controlling the forum, and as these boards are often taken down, moving the conversation to another channel means they are better able to maintain access to logs of their previous communications. While these communities might be viewed as advanced and stealthy, deploying secretive messaging and using encrypted tools to communicate with one another, members are often just like any other average internet user or enterprise employee, turning to freely available and simple tools in order to help get the job done.Indeed, Flashpoint's four-year analysis of the evolution of cybercriminal communications strategies, tactics, and the tools reveals that Skype -- the Microsoft-owned instant messaging and video calling app embedded into many Windows products -- is the most commonly used communications tool among cybercriminals.

Mark Zuckerberg himself, the creator of Facebook and the fifth richest man in the world, just descended down to Earth to walk among us plebeians at the Facebook Developer Conference in San Jose.I was one of the mere mortals lucky enough to witness the power and strength of His Holiness as he gilded around the halls of the San Jose Convention Center, and let me tell you, it was amazing.Followed by press people and some well dressed security staff, Zuck very quickly walked around some of the booths here at the conference, and met with some Facebook fans.Mark told an adoring worshipper: “Sorry, I can’t do selfies. If I did a selfie I’d be doing a selfie with everybody.”While he walked around people ran up to Lord Zuck and humbly introduced themselves.

They complained, but they downloaded it anyway and immediately made Messenger the number one app in the App Store.Facebook says 1.2 billion people use Messenger every month, and they’re using it more than ever.David Marcus, Facebook’s VP of messaging products, recently told me that people once used Messenger to make first contact.Users would say hi, exchange numbers, then take things to text. Now, he says, people stay in Messenger because they find that easier and everyone is already there.Messenger, like all good messaging apps, has become incredibly sticky—which explains Facebook wants to cram every imaginable feature, idea, and experiment into it.

Lync & Co, the new automaker with Chinese money and manufacturing and Volvo's engineering resources, has just previewed its 03 Concept, a design prototype that is the second vehicle the startup has shown in just five months.Leaning heavily on the same styling language first established with the 01 Concept, the car is set to roll under the klieg lights at the Shanghai Motor Show this week, but for now, we've got these first images of the sedan. The car is expected to ride atop a similar chassis as the 01 crossover SUV, which means it likely employs a version of the Compact Modular Architecture shared with sister brand Volvo. The 03 Concept four-door looks similar in size to the 01 crossover, so it's reasonable to expect that it, too will be powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gas engine backed by an electric motor.Penned under the watchful eyes of superstar designer Peter Horbury, Executive Vice President Design at Geely Auto Group (who is best known for transforming Volvo's lineup), the 03 carries a similar nose graphic as the 01, including its unique fender-top headlamps and broad, narrow slit grille. Its overall proportions are quite traditional, yet rather sporty, particularly thanks to details like its blacked-out roof and complex five-spoke wheels.

Being able to see when coming out of tunnels and recognizing when traffic lights are on are rather important for self-driving cars and this Sony sensor is making it happen. The first high-sensitivity camera sensor could be coming to cars as early as 2018.On Wednesday, Sony announced the commercialization of the industry’s first high-sensitivity CMOS sensor that is capable of seeing in only moonlight. The IMX390CQV is a 2.45-megapixel camera designed specifically for driving. The minimal megapixel design allows each pixel to gather more light, which means the sensor can perform in as low as 0.1 lux, which is about equal to moonlight. The sensor, which measures 1/2.7 inches, also adjusts the circuitry for enhanced light sensitivity, providing a 1.5 times boost in low-light visibility compared to other automotive cameras.

Even if you never install a tredjepartsapp there are ways for hackers to get sensitive information from your mobile.Researchers at Newcastle University in the Uk has published a report showing how the small movements that occur when you enter a pin code gives a rash in the sensitive accelerometers.the Researchers trained a neural networks to find patterns in the signals, which were connected to the number combinations, and the program could then guess the correct pin on the first attempt 70% of the time, and always within five attempts. In the Android required no special permission for apps and sites to read motion data, so the researchers were able to show how it is sufficient to open a page with their code and leave it open in a background tab to come across the pin codes and other.Apple and Mozilla updated their system last year so that the accelerometer requires a permit, but an app that pretends to do otherwise would be able to spy via the accelerometer.the Next step for the researchers is to examine the degree to which fitnessarmband also can spy on the user.
