If you went back just two decades, it would seem impossible that people would no longer need weekly planners and rolodexes.Keeping track of your schedule, planned events, and friend’s phone numbers was a pen and paper ordeal.Everything is in one place, managed by a smart computer. It’s easy to shrug off the notion that people don’t talk as much due to the evolution of technology, but with AI, it is clear that the way we talk to one another is quickly changing.Similar to the perks of streamlined organization, Artificial Intelligence allows entrepreneurs to text or email on the go.You just say the word, “Google, send an email to Bob,” and the AI will allow you to vocalize what you want to say.
p A new dating app lets people search for sperm and egg donors, surrogate mothers and lovers. The makers of Just A Baby say anybody who wants to have a child can sign up, and hope it will be useful for single people, same-sex couples or people who have not had a child but want one.But some organisations have criticised the app.The BBC's Zoe Kleinman reports.
p It’s starting to get hot outside, and if you need a break from the scorching caress of the sun, staying inside with an air conditioner and some great entertainment might be the way to go.Every month brings a new crop of shows and movies to Netflix, and June is no exception.Binge watchers will be happy to see the fifth season of Orange is the New Black, a comedy/drama about life in a women’s prison. If superheroes are more your speed, season 5 of Arrow, the action-packed show about DC superhero Green Arrow, will also arrive.Netflix also has some new shows coming out, including Gypsy, which stars Naomi Watts as a therapist who takes a disturbing interest in people her patients talk to her about. For less creepy thrills, there is GLOW; set in the ‘80s, it follows a struggling actress named Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), who auditions for a new, all-female wrestling league.
p Overwatch is an all-consuming game. You don’t just protect the payload: you become the payload, but sometimes, you have to take a break and play another game, instead.Fortunately, you can put your favorite Overwatch characters into those games, too, and a new mod for Invisible Inc. spices the turn-based strategy game up with a few Talon agents.“Talon Recruitment” is a mod made by user Saltrain that places the characters Sombra and Widowmaker into Invisible Inc., complete with several of their abilities from Overwatch.Sombra is able to use her ranged EMP to tack out targets from afar, infiltrate with her cloaking ability, and use her translocators to escape undetected.Widowmaker, meanwhile, can take out targets with her venom mines and sniper rifle after locating them with her infra-vision.
p Hitch up your horses – the wait for Red Dead Redemption 2 just got longer.Publisher Rockstar Games announced today the highly anticipated sequel to 2010's Red Dead Redemption will now go on sale in spring 2018.Red Dead Redemption 2's release date was initially slated for fall 2017, but Rockstar says 'the outlaw epic' requires more time, as it's being built from the ground up for PS4 and Xbox One."... some extra time is necessary to ensure that we deliver the best experience possible for our fans," Rockstar said in a post."We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready."Summer surprise and new screenshots
p Facebook has a massive challenge when it comes to dealing with disturbing content like revenge pornography and "sextortion."The world's largest social network deals with nearly 54,000 cases of this type of sexual abuse each month, The Guardian reported Monday. The number underscores the challenge Facebook faces in stamping out pornography -- not a surprise given that more than 1 billion people log on each day.The company still has employees to find these cases, but the sheer amount of content is overwhelming.Facebook told The Guardian that it's been turning to tech such as "image-matching" software to help get the content off the site."Keeping people on Facebook safe is the most important thing we do," said Monika Bickert, head of global policy management at Facebook.
p The FX show Taboo, a gritty historical drama starring Tom Hardy, is set in London during the Regency era, a period best known today as a popular setting for romance novels.Fantasy author Carrie Vaughn says that historical angle is what first attracted her to the show.“It’s set in the same time period as Jane Austen stories are,” Vaughn says in Episode 256 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast.Austen novels are largely set in sunny backyards and drawing rooms, whereas Taboo’s London is a blasted hellscape of mud and feces beneath a perpetually cloudy sky.“He’s trying to bring down something that’s terrible, but he’s pretty terrible himself.”Another big difference is that while Austen focuses on the hopes and dreams of her female characters, Taboo is pretty much a boy’s story, with the female characters largely relegated to the background.
p It’s been another interesting week in interactive marketing statistics and figures. Here are the seven that particularly caught our eye.released today at the company’s Engage conference in Prague, Czech Republic, brands are getting three times more engagement on Instagram, while celebrities are garnering 3.6 times more via the app, when compared apples-to-apples with Facebook. To be clear, these figures represent the raw number of likes, shares, comments and other social signals for those two categories—the stats are not adjusted, per-capita figures. While it’s probably not surprising to most social media marketers—who don’t work for media companies, that is—that Instagram yields a greater engagement rate (likes, shares, comments, etc., divided by viewers), it seems remarkable that it’s made such gains in terms of sheer signals.NASA’s been seeing great success with 360-degree video on Facebook and YouTube, according to Veronica McGregor, news and social media manager at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
But one by one, they fell to the dark side of the algorithm.Instead, let’s have a clear-eyed assessment of what organic engagement looks like on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and see where to go from here. These benchmarks can help determine what the best next steps are to maximize your engagement and your reach.1: Instagram Leads in EngagementMore than any other platform, Instagram seems to be the place people go to engage with brands.Engagement rate per post averages out to 1.66%, the only platform with over 1% in engagement.

p Two days before delivering the keynote at Google I/O, the company’s annual State of the Union address, Sundar Pichai is worried about losing his voice.Sitting at the coffee table inside his remarkably spartan office at company headquarters, the Google CEO speaks softly, even by his standards.Step by careful step, he explains the major themes that will run through his keynote speech, and at first, they seem less weighty than they should, considering they represent the near-future of the world’s largest internet business. That’s partly because Pichai isn’t feeling too well and partly because those themes aren’t all that different from the themes that drove last year’s speech.According to Pichai, Google’s new chip is far more powerful and far more versatile than the one that came before, designed not only to run the latest machine learning services but to train them as well.As he sees it, this is part of the company’s wider effort to democratize artificial intelligence, to put it in the hands of everyone.
A British activist whose work entails the defence of people affected by British anti-terror laws—and the war on terror, more broadly—Rabbani has spent hours in detention whilst travelling in and out of the UK.This time, however, he was carrying a laptop, the contents of which include information that he describes as relevant to a case of torture allegedly involving the US government.Four hours later, Rabbani, the international director of the human rights group Cage, was arrested and taken to a police station in the London borough of Hillingdon. He was held under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act, a law which grants police broad powers when it comes to the detention and interrogation of British citizens entering and leaving the country. As many as 561,660 such interrogations took place between 2015 and 2016, according to the Middle East Eye, citing British Home Office figures.Cage describes itself as an “independent advocacy organisation working to empower communities impacted by the War on Terror.” The group, which includes a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner released without charge, often provokes what Rabbani calls “uncomfortable conversations” about how Western nations deal with the threat of terrorism—and in particular, actions that are perceived to stir resentment among, and radicalise, young Muslims.

Security companies said scans of email networks showed no evidence the WannaCry malware came from employees being tricked into installing it via email. Most ransomware viruses are spread through “phishing” emails that trick recipients into clicking a link or opening an attachment, often appearing to be from a colleague or relative.“Spear phishing” is a more targeted version of the above; emails will address you by name and may appear to come from someone senior within your organisation, or from your email provider warning you to change your password. But Proofpoint, a security company that helped halt the spread of the virus on Friday night, and software group Symantec said it is unlikely that the outbreak stemmed from phishing.“We do not think this was an email in the first place,” said Rob Holmes, vice president of product at Proofpoint.“We haven’t seen any evidence that this specific incident was initiated over email.”
