Previously, Founder Institute CEO Adeo Ressi spoke in Germany, addressing 2016's funding trends. He detailed how these trends may impact the German startup scene, and provided advice on how to succeed in the shifting startup environment.Take your first steps toward launching a successful startup by applying to the Cologne Founder Institute.Valuations for startup companies have reached an all-time high, with companies that have not seen an inkling of profit sometimes being granted billion dollar valuations. For example, Uber recently raised funding at a $62.5 billion valuation, which is a substantially larger valuation than the value of the global taxi industry which it aims to replace.Beyond these extreme cases, valuations have also increased dramatically for more common, smaller-scope startups.
A week ago, Twitter announced it would become more aggressive in pursuing trolls on its service, a move which seems to have had some unforeseen consequences, judging by the present upheaval in the Bulgarian Twitter community. An increasingly large and unhappy number of people have had their Twitter accounts suspended and messages filtered out of conversations, apparently for the offense of merely tweeting in Cyrillic.Though the trigger for an account to be suspended hasn’t been specifically established, the prevailing hypothesis — based on users’ experience — appears to be that mentioning @YouTube or any other major account in Cyrillic will get one in trouble.Perversely, even if the initial tweeter isn’t affected, the chances of being suspended for anyone replying to such a tweet in Cyrillic are even higher. This problem has afflicted people with accounts dating all the way back to 2009, some of which have multiple thousands of followers.According to Twitter’s criteria, a user is declared to have “links” to the Russian government if it “frequently tweets in Russian” pic.twitter.com/vscVNZBBUh
Productivity giant Asana has launched a new Slack plugin, which promises to transform off-the-cuff ideas into actionable tasks you can put on your to-do list. The new plugin takes advantage of some of the new features in Slack’s API, and allows users to perform tasks in Asana without having to leave the popular chat service. With the plugin installed, users can create a task simply by hovering over a message, clicking the More Options icon, and selecting “Create a task.” Here’s how that looks like in practice. As you can tell from the above GIF, when you create a task, the plugin duplicates text from the message. It also includes a link to it, if users want to see the context in which it was said.Users can also mark tasks as complete, change due-dates and asignees, and view updates on projects, all within Slack.

A coalition of utilities and electric vehicle makers, including Tesla, filed a petition with a US Federal Appeals Court to force the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider its recent work to roll back auto emissions standards. In April, the EPA said that it would relax greenhouse gas emissions standards that had been put in place for model year 2022-2025 vehicles. One of the first actions that EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt took when he assumed office in 2017 was to start the process of rolling back passenger vehicle greenhouse gas standards for automakers. The standards had been made official late in the Obama presidency, but the Trump administration claimed that the standards were too burdensome for automakers to adhere to.Automakers agreed, despite having been party to years of negotiations with the previous EPA to determine what was technically and economically possible from a fuel efficiency standpoint. The National Coalition for Advanced Transportation (NCAT) represents 12 utilities as well as Tesla, electric truck maker Workhorse, and EV charging network EVgo.

PayPal could well be set to move further into high-street shopping after acquiring iZettle for $2.2bn.The Swedish firm is best known for its portable point of sale (POS) readers, which can plug into a smartphone or tablet to allow businesses of any size to quickly and easily begin accepting card or contactless payments. The deal could well see PayPal move out of the online world and become a recognised form of payment in shops using iZettle's card readers, competing with the likes of Apple Pay.Reports last month suggested that PayPal could be moving into supplying debit cards as it looks to expand its reach into the wider payments world. In a statement on its website, iZettle CEO and co-founder Jacob de Geer welcomed the deal, which he said would allow the company to "join forces" with PayPal."The opportunity to become part of PayPal was too good to pass up," he said, "The global scale and 19 million merchant relationships that PayPal has enables us to move faster and reach further than ever before.

This screen is still 1080p resolution at 1,080 x 2,280 and it’s just as great a panel as we’ve come to expect from OnePlus. The OnePlus 6 sports an all-glass Gorilla Glass 5 design, which looks quite striking, but leaves me worried about durability.Other unibody glass phones like the iPhone X crack very easily when dropped, since Gorilla Glass is designed to protect against scratches and not so much cracks and breaks.OnePlus told me Dash Charge is so far ahead of wireless charging and it wants to maintain a positive experience with consumers.I really would have preferred it was included. While I don’t personally use wireless charging, I would have liked OnePlus to take advantage of the materials and include it.
Facebook today published its annual transparency report, and for the first time included the number of items removed in each category that violated its content standards. While the company seems to be very proficient at removing nudity and terrorist propaganda, it’s lagging behind when it comes to hate speech.Of the six categories mentioned in the report, the number of hate speech posts Facebook’s algorithms caught before users reported them was the lowest:For hate speech, our technology still doesn’t work that well and so it needs to be checked by our review teams. We removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech in Q1 2018 — 38 percent of which was flagged by our technology.Compare that percentage with the number of posts proactively purged for violent content (86 percent), nudity and sexual content (96 percent), and spam (nearly 100 percent).
Project Maven with Pentagon sees 4,000 Google staff petition management against it, with some resigning in protestGoogle staff are reportedly unhappy with the firm after it emerged earlier this year that Google was assisting the Pentagon in a little-known drone project called Project Maven. So much so that almost 4,000 employees have reportedly signed an internal petition asking Google to end its participation in Project Maven, saying the project “will irreparably damage Google’s brand and its ability to compete for talent.”And now it has been reported that at least dozen staffers at Google has resigned over the matter, which they feel clashes with the “don’t be evil” ethos of the search engine giant.Google’s involvement in the controversial Project Maven aims to speed up the analysis of drone footage.Essentially, the company is using machine-learning algorithms and AI to help the US military assess drone footage quickly.
BlackBerry has had a bumpy ride the last few years, but the brand is still alive and kicking thanks to a partnership with Chinese manufacturer TCL.Now its gearing up to launch a new device: BlackBerry sent out invites to a June 7 event, where it will announce the successor to last year’s KEYone. The invite is sparse on details, other than to say BlackBerry is hosting an event in New York on June 7.It also reveals the name of the device: The BlackBerry Key2.Despite the anachronism of a physical keyboard on a 2018 device, my colleague Matt Hughes liked last year’s model in his review; he found the device to have an “unsurpassed productivity experience” at the time, thanks to features like handy keyboard shortcuts and gestures. We don’t know much of what to expect of this years device.
Facebook data on more than 3 million people who took a personality quiz was published onto a poorly protected website where it could have been accessed by unauthorized parties, according to New Scientist. In a report exposing the potential leak, New Scientist says that the data contained Facebook users’ answers to a personality trait test. While it didn’t include users’ names, in many cases it contained their age, gender, and relationship status. However, New Scientist found that a username and password that granted access to the data could be found “in less than a minute” with an online search, enabling anyone to download the trove of personal information. The data was gathered by a psychology test called myPersonality, according to New Scientist.Around half of the test’s 6 million participants are said to have allowed their information be anonymously shared with researchers.
The Mars Lunar Greenhouse is designed to supply 100% of the air and 50% of the food an astronaut needs for 2 years.Dave Mosher/Business InsiderElon Musk and SpaceX have a goal of permanently colonizing Mars, but traditional life support systems run through food, water, air, and other supplies relatively quickly.Plants and bacteria can recycle astronaut waste while growing them food to eat — an approach called bioregenerative life support.NASA funded a Mars Lunar Greenhouse project with a goal of supply 100% of the air and 50% of the food astronauts need. But the most important question remains unanswered by Musk, his company, and others eyeing the red planet: How will visitors to Mars stay alive, let alone permanently settle down?He lived in space roughly 14 months, yet required resupply missions every few months.

We open up too many apps on Android like we open up too many tabs on Chrome, and there was a handy solution: the 'Clear All' button that closes all of open apps. This button is sorely missing from the Android P beta, which introduces a new interface to the home and recent buttons. It gives you can an overview of all open apps when you swipe up from the bottom of the screen. That's all well and good, but this new multitasking UI is missing the 'Close All' button that was introduced in Android Nougat and so many people rely on.They took notice and, as you do these days, took to Twitter.Android VP of Engineering responded to one of these tweets, noting that the 'Clear All' button shall return, responding with, "Coming to a Beta near you soon".
