Chabahar Port: Afghanistan sends its first consignment of exports to India bypassing Pakistan

On February 24, 2019, Afghanistan sent its first consignment of exports to India through Chabahar port bypassing Pakistan.

The cargo was flagged off by President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani in a ceremony held at Zaranj, which is a major stop on this new route between India and Afghanistan.

In 2017, India had already sent its first export cargo to Afghanistan through Chabahar port.

Most notably, it was as early as in 2003 itself when India and Iran had begun to negotiate the development of Chabahar by India, which however had remained pending until 2015.

It was finally in 2015 after a long delay of 10 years under the UPA government, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on this port.

This MoU on Chahbahar has also given a larger strategic impetus to India’s foreign policy centred on the upper western reaches of the Indian Ocean.
