AirPower: Apple’s wireless charging protocol

Apple’s long-awaited AirPower charging pads are soon to make a debut. This has been speculated from all the charging pad related teasers that were present across the web. Apple floated the teaser in the form of prints related to the charging pad on AirPods’ packaging.

Remember September 2017 when we were introduced to the charging pads alongside iPhone X’s release. Apple at that event had stated that the much-awaited charging pad would be made available to users by the first quarter of 2018. However, technical and manufacturing hitches delayed the release of the AirPower pad.

Gestures have been made towards such developments as- the AirPower pad will charge multiple supported Apple devices at 15W speeds, which is double the rate of other third-party Qi chargers, and it has geared the users with pre-guided pictorial instructions for charging the AirPods, which appear in the form of pictures printed on the AirPod case.

The Qi standard charging mats do not support multiple charging at once, but Apple has intended to include this feature in its AirPower pad.

The AirPower is intended to be compatible with devices like all the iPhones after iPhone 8, Apple Watch Series 3 and newer, and the second-gen AirPods.

On a side note, it has become a mainstream ploy among tech companies to leak teasers of upcoming products in advance to get a gist of user reaction. The production of AirPower was halted after technical issues surrounding heat exchange and inter magnetic resonance problems. And, after that, Apple removed all the media and information related to AirPower pads from its websites. The leak may not be the most appropriate way for a marketing strategy, but for all people who enjoy the experience of the Apple ecosystem, it’s good news.

Know about Qi Chargers

Qi is an open interface standard which has been developed by the NJ-based multinational consortium called Wireless Power Consortium. Qi allows transfer of power wirelessly using inductive charging across distances of up to 1.6 inches. Nikola Tesla also tried to do something like that with coils which are now called Tesla coils. The devices that work on the Qi standard wireless charging are reliant upon electromagnetic induction between planar coils. In the Qi system, the charging pod connected to the power source provides inductive power, while the Mobile Devices consume the inductive power.

That being said, The AirPower is a different protocol than the Qi standard which would feature the ability to charge multiple devices at once.
