Tips to Effectively Market Your Construction Business

Owning a construction business means you have a lot of balls to juggle. You've got your actual job, the construction. You've got to have customer service skills to deal with clients. You've got to be an accountant, too. But you've also got to know how to effectively market your business.

Here are some tips for marketing your construction business, whether you're new to the game or just need some fresh ideas.

Become an Industry Association Member

Find an association to join in your specialty, such as Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) or the National Association of Women in Contracting (NAWIC). These associations may have a fee to join, but offer a variety of services which may include low-cost advertising, networking events and referrals, and free or low-cost marketing advice.

Use Social Media Ads

One way businesses sometimes waste money is by running ads that target too many people. Social media ads let you choose really specific demographics.  For example, if you use Facebook ads, then you want to hit people in your service area who are likely to use your business, such as homeowners. If you don't add these parameters, your ad will be seen by teens who aren't interested in your services.

Instagram advertising is very similar to Facebook because it's owned by Facebook. Be sure to make a business Instagram account; this will allow you to track how many visitors you get. Having an Instagram account that shows your best work can be a valuable tool, especially if you're doing something like kitchen remodeling.

Make sure your ad is visually appealing and doesn't look too much like an ad. In social media, native advertising, or ads that look like the rest of the page, are key. So a non-pro photo may be better to use than a professionally staged one.

Also include a call to action so your customer can contact you, along with an enticement, like a discount or sale price.

Try out Google Custom Intent Audiences

You probably know what Google Ads (formerly Adwords) is. They just added a new feature: Custom Intent Audiences. This allows you to target people who are searching for terms that are related to your business. For example, if you're an electrician in San Diego and they're searching for "San Diego electricians," they'll see your banner ads and your YouTube videos as one of their search results.

Get on Consumer Review Sites

One of the things any construction business needs is legitimacy. Get your business listed on a contractor referral site like Angie's List, a trusted place for consumers to find contractors. You can also list your business on a site like Yelp and ask your customers to leave reviews. Another good thing is getting your business accredited by the Better Business Bureau; an A rating will give your potential customers a lot of confidence.

Try Vehicle Wraps

Using vehicle wraps on your vehicle or your company's fleet is an easy way to advertise your business. These are essentially vinyl billboards that wrap around your car or truck. One study says that individual vehicle ads get 30,000 to 70,000 impressions. Finally, a reason to be happy about being stuck in rush hour-- more people will see your company.

The American Trucking Association’s study, The Visual Impact of Trucks in Traffic showed that 96% of drivers noticed truck side ads and had more impact than billboards. 75% of people who saw the ad formed an opinion about the company, and 29% said they would make a decision about whether ot not to buy based only on that ad.

For the best, most effective vehicle wrap, make sure it has an easy to read font with a relatively simply design. Also include a call to action, like a phone number or a website. You can also add a discount like, "Mention this ad and get 15% off." This will also allow you to track the effectiveness of the ad.

Just as you'd like for the other channels of your marketing to be consistent, so should the vehicle underneath the wrap as well. If you have multiple vehicles, choose the same mid-size truck. This way people not only associate the wrap with you, but the vehicle itself.

It may not be possible to do all of these at once, so decide on what to do based on your budget and what you think will be effective. If your business doesn't lend itself to pleasing visuals, you might not want to bother with Instagram, but a vehicle wrap could be the thing. Then see how many new leads you get as a result to assess whether to keep doing it.
