Battle of Smartphones: Samsung Galaxy Fold vs Galaxy S10

Samsung unveiled a slew of new smartphones in February, including the S10 generation phones (S10, S10 Plus, S101e, S10 5G) and the Samsung Galaxy Fold. While it’s true that every brand sings the praises of its own products, this Samsung line has actually delivered.

The S10 lineup has formidable benefits, but of interest is obviously Samsung’s folding phone. This is the first folding phone from one of the bigger smartphone manufacturers. When you pick out a new smartphone, you will likely want a great camera, advanced technology features and a sturdy design, putting off the need for cell phone repair

We’re going to weigh the pros and cons of the S10 lineup and the Galaxy Fold in this article, so you can evaluate your options and choose the best Android phone for you this year.

The Samsung S10 Lineup

The S10 is Samsung’s newest Android model, evolving from the excellent Galaxy S9 family. There’s no denying the S10 had to live up to some serious expectations. But innovative design and a new interface has allowed the S10 to outperform its predecessor.

When you purchase the S10, you get to enjoy a 6.4-inch curved Dynamic AMOLED screen. Wondering what a Dynamic AMOLED screen actually is? Samsung tells us that the Dynamic AMOLED outperforms other AMOLED screens in terms of color display.

The S10 supports HDR10+ as well. This means owners can enjoy brighter, crisper colors, especially when objects move on screen.

Design-wise, the S10 is almost bezel-less, with only a small point at the bottom of the phone resembling the Android “chin.” There isn’t a notch. In its place, there is a punch hole in the top right-hand corner of the display which is home to the camera.

The camera is a 10Mp device with an 80 degree field of view. The selfie camera might not be anything special, but the rear cameras are sure to impress.

When you purchase the S10, you get three rear cameras: a 12Mp telephoto snapper responsible for taking better pictures while zoomed in. You also get a wide-angle 12Mp lens which will do most of the picture taking, and a 16Mp Ultra Wide angle lens that you can use to capture breathtaking landscape photos.

Samsung reports that it has used AI to analyze more than a million professional photos in order to teach the S10 to give owners tips for better photos.

The S10 can help you to adjust the angle you’re taking the photo of if your phone isn’t being held straight, and it can help you understand where to place your subject to obtain the best focus.

The S10 can also shoot HDR10+ video and features improved video stabilization, making for better videos you can take while you are on the go.

If you’re a fan of gaming, you probably won’t be disappointed in the S10. Taking a look at the phone’s specs, we can see the S10 has a 7 nanometer octa-core processor and an incredible amount of RAM - 8GB. That’s more RAM than you’d see in some laptops.

All-in-all, the Samsung S10 seems like a good choice for Samsung fans and smartphone fans in general. When it came out, it was cheaper than the current iPhone model and the Pixel 3. The combination of a more reasonable price tag and all of the features packed into the phone make the Samsung S10 worth considering.

Next up: The Galaxy Fold

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you were probably aware that Samsung was planning to release a folding phone and it finally hit the shelves in April.

Owners of the Galaxy Fold have access to a 4.6 inch HD+ display with a 20:9 aspect ratio when the phone is folded up. When it is folded out, users enjoy a 7.3 inch Dynamic AMOLED display with stunning resolution - somewhere around 2048 x 1536.

When the phone is folded up, you can use a 10Mp selfie camera. When folded out, you have access to two front-facing cameras and three rear cameras. The Galaxy fold is powered by an astonishing 12GB of RAM and has the same 7 nanometer octa-core processor that the S10 does, a feature gamers will enjoy.

If you are considering purchasing the Samsung Fold, price will be a major consideration. The Galaxy Fold is on sale for $1,980. Additionally, we are talking about first-generation technology. Although core services like Google Maps are optimized to work with folding screens, other apps might not be.

The Big Picture

The Galaxy S10 is that reliable, familiar phone that you know and love but if you are into a phone that is bold and exciting, you may want to take the plunge and purchase a Galaxy Fold.

Although it is true that Samsung tweaked the Galaxy S10’s design compared to the S9, the Fold represents a new form factor entirely. However, the S10 is dependable and still brings exciting features to the table, while the Fold is still currently getting adjusted to the market.

Now that you know the basic specs of both phones, the choice is yours: what model will you go with this year?
