Aaron Hughes greets Northern Ireland Director O'Neill after the victory over Belarus in Euro Cup 2020

Aaron Hughes rewarded special tribute to Northern Irish coach Michael O'Neill following his retirement from the match. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase Northern Ireland Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

A 39 year old former captain announced his decision to hang up after Tuesday's victory in the Euro 2020 qualifiers in Belarus.

Hughes won 112 caps for his country, a record for an off-fielder, and is part of the team that reached the finals of Euro 2016 under O'Neill's leadership after canceling his 2011 decision to withdraw from international football.

Hughes, who made his international debut in 1998 and ran his country 48 times, said in a statement issued by the Irish federation: "I would like to thank all the managers who chose me. Each of them played a role and had a great influence.

"From Lawrie McMenemy, who made me debut, to Sammy (McIlroy) who gave me the armband, through Lawrie (Sanchez), Nigel (Worthington) and obviously Michael (O'Neill), who has been more than fantastic with me.

"It would be remiss of me not to mention it otherwise. At the stage of my career, when I did not play so much football, he always saw value in me. He always saw that I could have a good influence with young players, and he kept me around and gave me a goal. "

He gave me the opportunity to come back, to be in the team and finally to win euros. For that, I will always be grateful.

Cooks town born Hughes climbed the ladder in Newcastle and played more than 200 games for the club before moving to Aston Villa and Fulham. He then represented QPR, Brighton, Melbourne City and the Kerala Blasters in India before joining Hearts in 2017.

He only played seven appearances with Hearts last season and was not in the match against Belarus. His last appearances in Northern Ireland were friendly against Panama and Costa Rica last summer.

Hughes also thanked his family, support staff and fans before paying tribute to his colleagues.

"Finally, I would like to thank my teammates," he said. "The memories we had, the highs we had in euros, are experiences that you can’t live alone.

"You can only reach those heights if you have good teammates around you and I was very fortunate to be part of a group that has worked very hard to be successful for seven or eight years.

"They took me to one euro, they took me to 100 caps and I'm very proud to retire because I was part of a very special group of players from Northern Ireland."
