Hourihane admired by McCarthy as Ireland takes top place in Euro 2020 qualifiers

Mick McCarthy praised the winner of the match, Conor Hourihane, after seeing him take the Republic of Ireland to the top of his Euro 2020 qualifying group. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase Republic of Ireland Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

The Aston Villa midfielder made an incredible free-kick and gave Ireland a 1-0 win over Georgia, their Group D rival, at the Aviva stadium.

Ireland posted a better result after defeating the Gibraltar group on Saturday, and Hourihane, who took over from Robbie Brady under the new leadership, was particularly applauded.

McCarthy said, "I'm obviously delighted because Saturday's performance was excellent, his deliveries that night, his free-kicks and turns were good.

"The goal was special, was not it? I'm happy for him because I've always believed in him and I thought he was a good player.

"I tried to sign him, but we did not have any money and he went elsewhere."

The cause of Hourihane was greatly helped by the presence of his fellow countryman, Glenn Whelan, at his side. The eyebrows rose when the 35-year-old got a hat after his international career seemed to end under the latest boss, Martin O'Neill, but his ease in the middle of the field allowed those around him to prosper.

"It was absolutely remarkable. For 35 years, it's a testimony of how well he looked after himself. I thought he had a really good game. He started playing and he broke things. " McCarthy said.

Ireland dominated much of the match, which was briefly interrupted when supporters protesting outgoing FAI General Manager John Delaney threw tennis balls into the field.

“We have to play against other teams and beat them, so I do not mind. I can not affect what they do”

Hourihane's decisive free-kick resumed again, but the break in the first half required a successful save to give Valerian Gvilia an equalizer and a post to defeat Jaba Kankava's goal.

That win, combined with Denmark's 3-3 draw in Switzerland, put Ireland at the top of the group and was exactly where they hoped to be with tougher testing ahead.

Asked about the result in Basel, McCarthy said: "It was a good result for us. They may cut their throat and make two draws, who knows?

"But we have to play against other teams and beat them, so that does not bother me. I can not affect what they do."
