Comic Improv that Birthed the Popular Catchphrase on Rick & Morty

A true sign of a comedic genius is indicated by their ability to improvise. Therefore, it does not come as a great surprise that Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick & Morty, has often gone off the script to slip in a few gems here and there. However, little did he know that his catchphrase “Wubba Lubba dub-dub” that Rick belts out at the end of Meeseeks and Destroy episode would catch on like fire!

Soon enough the catchphrase was a recurring entity all through Season 1. Rick often uses the phrase to express his happiness and even used it as a joke. It became a recurring joke until it wasn’t. As nonsensical as it may have seemed without context, the Birdperson, in Ricky Business explained to Morty that in Bird language, the phrase actually translated to “I am in great pain, please help me.” Quite obviously, the translation added a darker twist to the show, which was already diving in complex human emotions.

Nevertheless, Roiland’s ability to make up such a catchy catchphrase at a moment’s notice speaks volumes about his wit and humor. It also gives the viewer insight into how much fun the show’s creators are having while filming the show. Furthermore, it adds more personality to the show as the “fun” catchphrase gets morphed into something heart-wrenching.

In an exclusive Behind The Scenes interview, Justin Roiland confessed that “Wubba Lubba dub-dub” was not on the script when he said it. In fact, he came up with it while booth recording the lines for Rick! According to Roiland, the inspiration for the catchphrase may be attributed to Arsenio Hall’s smart quips that he used on his show. Roiland said that all he did was to attempt something similar. While Rick is notoriously known for changing his catchphrases, “Wubba Lubba dub-dub” has made a reappearance in Season 2 as well.

A short teaser of the fourth seasons of Rick & Morty was released during the Comic-Con in San Diego. The announcement of 7 more Seasons triggered a wave of excitement amongst all the fans that religiously follow the show. The 4th Season is expected to be released on November 2019, which is rather expected as the show is known for taking long breaks between seasons. It is estimated that the new season will also be composed of 10 episodes as is the trend.

It appears that nobody can get enough of Rick & Morty and it is just a matter of time until we are treated to some new episodes!
