How Two-Way MRI Communication Will Cut Costs and Make Patients Comfortable

THE PROBLEM

 Let’s face it: getting an MRI scan can be an uncomfortable process. The loud noise of the machine and the tiny space inside can unsettle just about any patient. Not to mention, the consequences of having an antsy patient inside the MRI are costly.

What is a motion artifact?

Motion artifacts are distortions or blurs in the MRI scan that make it difficult for physicians to interpret the information they need. These occur when the patient does not remain still during the MRI scan, which can happen when the patient is uncomfortable or anxious.

In the event of a motion artifact, physicians almost always ask for MRI techs to take the patient through another MRI scan.

“Correcting for motion artifacts can extend the time (and possibly increase patient discomfort) associated with an MR examination, which affects patient and provider time, hospital cost and other resources associated with imaging,” said Jalal B. Andre, MD, who researched motion artifacts in a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Dr. Andre and researchers found that, in 2015 alone, patient motion during MRI scans was costing healthcare providers an additional $115,000 per year.

How common are motion artifacts?

In the study conducted under Dr. Andre, MRI examination data was analyzed at one imaging center running 1,238 sequences over the course of one week. Of that number, 68 sequences were repeated, affecting approximately 20 percent of all patients. The authors explain that technologists often redo sequences due to detected motion, because it can substantially affectthe quality and accuracy of the exam. However, this has negative side effects of its own. Unfortunately, motion artifacts are all too common of a problem for imaging centers worldwide.

THE SOLUTION

Motion artifacts are too costly and too common.
