Vinyl Sheet or Vinyl Planks - Which One Is Better?

If you are renovating your business premises, chances are you will be advised and asked to choose what commercial-grade flooring you want.

While commercial tiles and carpet tiles are common in offices, your flooring supplier should also throw some roll-on sheet or vinyl plank options in the pool, all the more for the bathroom and kitchen.

Commercial Vinyl flooring encompasses two types of vinyl: roll-on vinyl, also known as vinyl sheet, and Vinyl tiles or planks, also known as luxury vinyl tiles or planks. The way these two are produced creates their different strengths and weaknesses.

  • Why you should consider vinyl sheet flooring:

- Vinyl sheet flooring is usually installed using one or two pieces or vinyl - this means you won't see any seams between your floor and less chances of having issues with moisture penetration because of it.

- Commercial vinyl sheet is also cheaper as it is mass-produced and doesn't need to be individually cut as some planks or tile would. visually speaking.

- Visually speaking, it can replicate any pattern. a photographed image of a pattern can be printed on it and can even have some grout line to mimic wood planks or tile for example.

- Roll-on vinyl is harder to install on your own - dealing with one big sheet is a lot harder than several smaller pieces.

- Let's get this out of the way: the visual appeal of LVT or LVP is a lot more striking as the vinyl sheet's. Like its competitors, vinyl planks or tiles it can mimic all types of material, from wood to ceramic tiles. Vinyl planks or tiles are produced individually and can be cut in different sizes so patterns change and look more natural to the naked eye.

- LVP / LVT is more expensive than roll-on vinyl flooring as installing individual planks or tiles takes longer. However, it is a cheaper option than stone tiles, or authentic wood flooring for a very similar look and feel. Provided your installer is experienced, you can even request grouts to be installed between the tiles so it is even closer to a wood flooring or tiles. However do keep in mind that the more seams you create, the more likely you might deal with moisture issues doing the line (eg: mould).

- Vinyl planks are easier to DIY.

These are the main points you should consider when installing new commercial flooring. However, when making the decision think about its long term impact. While vinyl sheet is cheaper to install today, it is a lot harder and visually deterring to repair whereas you can easily purchase and replace a few tiles or planks if they are damaged.
