Hudson Yards Retail Center Set to Draw Over 20M Annual Visitors

Every revolution has its landmarks. For example, Russia had the Winter Palace, France had the Bastille and the Americans had Bunker Hill. Every revolution has its heroes, who invariably are honored with a chestful of beribboned medals. So it is not surprising that in 2019 when we have witnessed well-established luxury retailers fall into the abyss, that a new leader rises from the ashes and claims territory while setting off the triumphant alarm like horns of battle.

Hudson Yards is ranking at the top of the list in New York City as it establishes itself as the nucleus of a new counterculture in retail and fine dining. For the first time in history, retail influence has challenged the business model with a monumental push forward into the new era of consumerism. Moreover, for the first time in this century, men's fashions are generating more excitement and attracting more press coverage than women's. Welcome to the new pop society.

Today In: Lifestyle

If you remember a time in history when Great Britain skidded into a back seat as a world power, Carnaby Street became the international destination for men's fashion. At present, with the world rocking to the beat of the mighty American economy, step consumers have reached a point where they are persuaded to toss their old suits and footwear into the Hudson and step into the enthusiasm and energy of the new menswear world.

In short, the smoke has cleared away and the last decade of frenetic change, style sensibly has settled down. Nevertheless, from out of that frenzy and fury of the fashion and retail revolution evolved Hudson Yards. The new model is full of spirit and imagination with a guarantee that menswear style and shopping experience will never be dull again.

And so it goes. The current revolution aims to express a strong interest in the consumer. That in brief, is the purpose of this feature.

Hudson Yards, New York City’s newest neighborhood, is the center of Manhattan’s rapidly changing West Side. At the nexus of Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen, Hudson Yards has been transformed into a thriving destination to live, work, dine, shop, study, stroll or sightsee. Once complete, this 28-acre neighborhood will include 14 acres of public open space, the Western Hemisphere’s highest outdoor observation deck, as well as many commercial and residential buildings. At the heart of it all is Vessel, a climbable, interactive public monument designed by Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio.

Bounded by 30th and 34th Streets from 10th to 12th Avenues, Hudson Yards sits at the northern terminus of New York City’s famed elevated park, the High Line, and is serviced by the 34th Street-Hudson Yards station, an extension of the No. 7 Subway line, which connects to nearly all of the city’s other lines. The largest private real estate development in New York since Rockefeller Center, Hudson Yards is being co-developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group.

The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards, situated between 10 and 30 Hudson Yards, will be one of New York City’s premier locations for fashion and dining, setting a new benchmark for shopping in a dynamic, mixed-used setting. The retail center will present to visitors and residents a carefully curated collection of top brands through its 100-plus shops including New York City’s first ever Neiman Marcus, two-story mini anchor presentations by Zara and H&M, and a multitude of diverse fashion brands including AG Jeans by Adriano Goldschmied, Aritzia, Athleta, Banana Republic, Coach, Stuart Weitzman and Tory Burch; a beauty collection comprising The Body Shop, Kiehl’s, JoMalone, MAC, Origins, and Sephora; and an extraordinary collection of global luxury watch brands, including Rolex, which will encompass a 6,000-square-foot Watches of Switzerland showroom.

I recently had the privilege to speak with Kenneth A. Himmel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Related Urban, the mixed-use arm of Related Companies about his aim for Hudson Yards to generate tremendous sales growth in luxury Menswear, How technology is infused with the shopping experience at Hudson Yards and what makes shopping for men (at Hudson Yards) captivating and unique than any other place in the world!

Joseph DeAcetis: Talk to Forbes about your thoughts on how Hudson Yards will generate tremendous sales growth in luxury Menswear?

KH: New York City is in the midst of a retail shift to the West Side. Great menswear brands like Dunhill have opened stores at Hudson Yards and closed other locations—we now have their only flagship store in the city—which inherently drives their customer base to us. Neiman Marcus, their only store in New York City, opened with an emphasis on menswear with an incredible bar, Bar Stanley, and personal shopping experience in the menswear department, and will only expand their assortment as the neighboring office towers begin to move in.
