Flushable Nappy Liners or Reusable Baby Nappies – Which is best for my child?

When you have a new-born baby, you are anxious to make sure you do what is best for them. However, there are many other outside influences that make it difficult to decide on the best course of action when it comes to something as important as nappies, or diapers.

• Cost. It is estimated that the average parent will change a baby’s nappy 6000 times, so the price of each change has a massive impact on your pocket.

• Environment. We all want to do what is best for our planet, but it is not always as straightforward as it might seem. Reusable over single use products is normally accepted as being the most eco-friendly, but is it? You need to factor in the whole life-cycle impact of that product, like the amount of electricity used in washing and drying.

• Comfort. At the end of the day, your little one has to be comfortable. Coarse material can chaff, and non-absorbent material can leave your baby wet for long periods, resulting in nappy rash.

• Convenience. As mentioned before, 6000 nappy changes is a lot, so it is natural to look for the most convenient way to do this.

What are my options?

Baby Knows Best has a range to suit both camps, reusable and disposable, each keeping the above factors in mind. The flushable nappy liners are bio-degradable and can be disposed of down the toilet. Made from bamboo fiber, they are super-soft on the skin and hold 3 times their weight in water, so they are extremely absorbent. When finished with you simply flush them away. What could be more convenient? They are designed to be worn inside pants or traditional nappies, reducing the amount of washing required, or they can be worn with a Velcro style belt when just crawling around the home or sleeping.

The reusable baby nappies, or diapers, are made from the softest organic cotton, and with their 3-layer absorption system your baby will stay dry and comfortable for much longer and avoiding nappy rash, which can be most uncomfortable for your baby. We advise the use of barrier cream to avoid this and try and give your baby some nappy free time after changing, giving those sensitive areas time to air.

So, What Do I Choose?

At the end of the day, it is a matter of trial and error. Try both and see what feels like the best option for you and your baby. Or try a combination of liners inside the reusable nappy, to reduce the number of washes.

Traditional Terrys are not very absorbent and require several washes to get the best out of them. This all adds to the life-cycle cost and impact on the environment. However, our baby toilet training pants give you another option. Made from Terry toweling material, these have a triple layer lining with a water-resistant non-toxic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) inner layer making them extremely comfortable for your child.
