Euro 2020 qualifiers – Hungary, Slovakia get stadium bans for fans’ racist behaviour

Slovakia and Hungary will play their next Euro 2020 qualifiers behind closed doors after both national federations were sanctioned by European soccer’s governing body UEFA on Monday for racist behaviour by their supporters.

Riot police were called into action in Budapest after trouble erupted in the stands during the Euro Cup 2020 qualifier between the teams, which Slovakia won 2-1. Those who don’t want to miss the entertainment have already bought their Hungry Euro Cup Tickets.

In addition to accusations of racism, the Hungarian federation was also punished for its supporters who throw objects and fireworks and was fined 67,125 euros (£ 59,334). The Slovak federation was fined 20,000 euros.

Slovakia's next UEFA match will be a qualifying match for Euro 2020 against Wales on 10 October. Hungary's qualifying match against Azerbaijan on 13 October will also be in camera. Slovakia and Hungary both have nine points in five games, one point behind Croatia and three before Wales.

The Romanian Football Federation has been fined 83,000 euros and has been sentenced to play behind closed doors for the next two games for failing to control supporters in Group F matches with Spain and Malta.

Romania has been sanctioned for its invasions on the ground, its fireworks, its objects and the racist behavior of its supporters, including banners and offensive songs. Romania's next home game will be against Norway on 15 October, but UEFA said in a statement that the penalty for the second match was suspended for a year.

Romania is third in the standings with 10 points from six games, eight adrift of leaders Spain and one behind Sweden. The top two qualify for next year’s finals.
