Poker video history

Video poker machines barely survived in their early years. But thanks to Sea Redd, these machines survived difficult times and became extremely popular today.

As the name suggests, this game is a combination of poker and video machines. So the origins of video poker are two different games. As for poker, the Americans began to play it in the early 1800s. The exact date and time of the first game of poker is unknown, but writer Jonathan Green wrote that he watched the game on river boats in the Mississippi in the 1830s.

Mechanical machines with poker appeared in stores at the end of the 19th century. Then it was a primitive game where players tried to catch the best combination possible in exchange for beer or cigars. Charles Fey invented an advanced slot machine in 1895 when he created the first slot called Liberty Bell. This revolutionary machine will be the main one for video poker machines, which will appear eight decades later. Now let's continue from this place on the story of the history of video poker.

Video poker machines were invented in the mid-1970s as an alternative to poker, baccarat, blackjack and roulette table games. The idea was that the machines allowed to learn the rules of the game in a relaxed atmosphere, without worrying about other players.

Sea Redd was among those who believed in a new invention. He worked as a distributor for Bally Technologies and used his connections to convince Bally to start mass-producing video poker machines. However, Bally was not interested in moving away from the slot machines at that time, so Redd refused. He then convinced Bally to give him a patent for video poker, which allowed him to later become a millionaire.
