October 8, 2019: The Indian Ports Association has revealed that the country's top-12 major ports handled 348.44 million tonnes (MT) in the April-September period of the current financial year, recording a marginal 1.48 percent upswing.
The 12 ports had handled 343.37 MT cargo in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
IPA attributed the 1.48 percent growth to higher handling of coking coal, fertilisers and iron ore.
The 12 major ports include Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), VO Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia).
Containers recorded a growth of 5.61 per cent in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
Figures revealed that Deendayal port handled the highest traffic volume at 61.04 MT during the April-September period, followed by Paradip at 55.55 MT, Visakhapatnam at 34.75, JNPT at 34.41 MT, Kolkata (including Haldia) at 31.64 MT, and Mumbai at 30.10 MT.
August 22, 2019: Essar Ports has declared that the higher capacity utilisation at its recently commissioned terminals at Salaya and Vizag, and an increase in third-party cargo were the two key factors that will help it to achieve its target of handling 60 million tonnes (MT) of cargo by March 31, 2020.
The company’s first quarter cargo handling performance has been very strong and brought it closer to achieving its target throughput by the end of the current financial year.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2019, Essar Ports reported an impressive 17.4 percent growth in cargo volumes across its four terminals.
All Essar terminals are focused on bulk and dry bulk cargoes that are primarily used as raw material in core sector industries, like steel and power.

December 18, 2019: The cargo operation of Air India has carried 40 tonnes of solar televisions and speakers in four consignments from Mumbai, India to Nairobi, Kenya between December 6 and 18 in B787 Dreamliner.
“Air India is privileged to carry of solar panel shipment on Mumbai to Nairobi Dreamliner 787 partnering in carrying environment saver products to reduce carbon emissions.
Kenya has a huge demand for off-grid electricity to power household equipment and Air India has recently restarted the Mumbai-Nairobi with our Dreamliner B787 after many years,” said an Air India Cargo official.
The solar equipment was of the Sun King brand of Greenlight Planet, a Chicago-based company that provides off-grid electricity to more than 60 countries, including India and Kenya.
After a decade, Air India started flying back to Nairobi from Mumbai with a thrice-a-week frequency from November 27.
Greenlight Planet was founded by T Patrick Walsh, a University of Illinois student who started selling solar-powered lamps in rural India.
