The Noragi Jacket: A Traditional Garment

The Noragi is usually made from lightweight cotton hopsack which has an open basket weave and is; as a result, it is incredibly breathable. Think of it more a summer cardigan than a proper jacket; an easy garment that can be thrown on in times when a t-shirt just won’t do.

Inspired by Japanese/Chinese clothing, the boro Noragi is oversized jackets with dropped shoulders and an open front look. It’s often described by Chinese people as a sort of Kimono, but in fact, has a history and heritage all of its own.

What is Noragi?

We have seen the Noragi described as a jacket, shirt, comfort blanket and cardigan depending on whom you ask. Strictly speaking, it’s a garment of Japanese people design by brands with an open banded front and sleeves which can be either both; full or half-length. Traditionally, vismin noragi were worn by farmers and workers and they consider it the best workwear style. Nowadays, it becomes a streetwear favorite, and thanks to its simple, relaxed shape.

Is Noragi the same as a Kimono Jackets or Shirts?

There are certain similarities between these two, but fundamentally they’re quite different. A Kimono is a traditional attire worn mostly by women with a full length, T-shaped body, and wide, wrist-length sleeves- making it utterly useless to those working machinery or even making coffees. On the other hand, the Noragi garment falls to the hip and tapers at the sleeve, a much more practical silhouette suited for casual wear.

Is Noragi a shirt then?

Typical it is not. Some refer to it as a shirt but wear one without anything layered underneath and you will start wearing into Hassel off territory. For its best look wear with a plain white t-shirt and navy chino trousers or over a simple checks shirt. Leave the front open or tie a simple knot with the self-febricities.

However, lightweight garments were influenced by a Japanese workwear silhouette and are traditionally worn by men but now Noragis can be worn by anyone. I think Noragi is versatile enough to complete a streetwear look or as a jacket for a formal look. We so many options available out there online, just pick your favorite Noragi men jacket or coast and style yours. Some top-rated designers craft them from Japanese double gauze cotton making it perfect as a lightweight jacket for every summer uniform.
