Knowing About Digital Two Way Radio

A two-way radio is a communication technology, which is capable of transmitting and receiving signals or data. So, it is commonly known as walkie-talkie or handheld. It is the combination of transceiver, receiver, and transmitter.

History

In 1923, the first portable two-way radio was built in Australia. It was developed by Frederick William Downie, a senior Constable from the Victorian Police. They used wireless communication for the first time in the whole world. The types of equipment were so complex that the whole back seat of a patrol car was needed only for a single set. So, the developers worked more and invent the compact and more powerful designs. During World War 2, the handheld communication equipment was vastly used both the ground soldiers and air forces. That time simplex mode was used for the communication. That means all the radio signals had the same frequency and the information was transmitted from a single channel. As the same channel was used for both transmitting and receiving, so while the signal was transmitted at a time, others had to listen. At first, the voice could not be transmitted by the radio system.  There was a code-named Morse code, which was used and retrieved by trained by operators. There used to be always a dedicated operator whose duty was to handle all the messages.

Modern Times

Now a day, the two-way radios can work in a half-duplex mode or in duplex mode depending on the design. With the receiving mode of the radio, the user can listen to other transmissions happening on the same channel. If the user wants to talk, then he needs a button known as the ‘push to talk’ button. By pressing it, the receiver mode is gone and the messages will be transmitted. After releasing the button it will again turn into a receiver. Only one user can transmit a message at a time by using the same channel. With a full-duplex mode, there is no need to wait to send the message. The transmitting and receiving channels are totally different. Either two separate radio channels or TDD (Time Division Multiplexing) method is used for that.

Digital Two Way Radio

Digital radios mean they are using digital logic. They use binary terms, which are either 0 or 1 for transmitting any voice message. Digital two-way radio is getting popularity over analog radios. There are also digital radios, which can work in analog mode as well. Normally, the message quality with the digital system is very high and clear.
