Ethical Behavior in the Work Place

Following the ethical behavior in the work place is impossible without facing unethical issues. The good companies know that the best defense is to train staff to cope with different ethical issues. Proactive leaders try to limit the amount of ethical issues and create a special ethic code. Leader is a person, who plays a significant role in a company. He is an example for other employees and must have strong ethical principles. The good leader knows the main sources of unethical influence and how to eliminate them:

  • Individual qualities. A leader must know his staff and know what troubles and difficulties have his employees. If a leader knows what makes his employee mad, it will make his life easier.
  • Employee diversification. The staff of many companies consists of employees of different nationalities, religions and ethical views. People have different reactions and view on the particular situations. A leader must have skills to cooperate with his employees in situations connected with some ethical issues.
  • Unethical influence. Despite the ethical code, the unethical issues appear every day and sometimes leader may be the source of this influence.

There is a great amount of ethical challenges that employees face every day. Harassment of any kind is a problem that employees face in their workplace. The source of the conflict may be the misunderstanding between employee and employer or supervisor. Different points of view may cause the conflicts that can grow into harassment. The special attention should be paid to sexual harassment; women are more likely to be exposed to sexual harassment. Faith and religion may cause big problems between people who have different views on these aspects.

The biggest ethical challenge the employers face in the work place is dishonesty. Dishonesty includes theft, fraud, abuse of the company time and property. Researchers say that dishonesty is a common situation in the work place. “Theft” has a lot of meaning and different employers understand different meanings, talking about theft in the work place. For somebody, ‘theft’ is taking home a pencil, for others it is stealing money from the company. There are a lot of factors that influence on, why people become dishonest. One of them is person’s decision to be or not to be honest. In other words, the person dishonesty depends on his behavior, believes, background, culture, and values. Another reason is a situation in which this person stays. The bad condition of work, abuses from employers influence on employee attitude to the company and how he would like to behave himself in this company.

The biggest ethical challenge for supervisors is making decisions that met their ethical believes. Ethical believes play a significant role in making decisions because supervisors must choose between their personal believes and the interests of the company or employees. The right decision is not always correct from the ethical point of view. Nevertheless, the interests of the company value higher than personal values of employee, employer or supervisor. In the face of this ethical dilemma supervisors must take all necessary measures to reduce the possible conflicts. To minimize the conflicts and problems that may appear is the main goal of supervisor.

The good work of the company depends on how employees, employers and supervisors can work together. The ability of compromises, mutual understanding and help are the key of growing and developing company. The good relations between these three groups may be reached by following the common rules:

  • Professionalism. You should always act as professional, talk to all people in the same tone, be polite and pleasant. Try to show the respect to other even if this person is not very pleasant for you. The key point is to treat other in way you want they treat you.
  • Honesty. Such ethical behavior as honesty will have a positive effect in the work place. Employees must understand that the company success depends on the actions of every person in the company. They must admit their mistakes and do everything possible for the company good. The company leaders must encourage their employees by letting them know that they will not have troubles because of their actions.
  • Trust. The trust between employer and employee is an essential point, they must trust each other and to count on each other. There should be a term “I have your back.” The understanding that somebody will help you in troubles is what both employee and employer want to have.
  • Responsibility. The most important ethical behavior in the work place is responsibility. Every worker of the company must know what the company expects of him. The employees must complete their tasks in time and the employers must control that everything is going according the company plan. The supervisors must count the ethical behavior in the work place and eliminate the possible conflicts between workers.

The ethical behavior in the work place depends on many factors, but the key point has always been the understanding between workers and leaders of the company. If the staff of the company works as a team and try to do all best for the company, such issues as ethical behavior in the work place disappear. The honesty from both sides is a guarantee for good work conditions. If the employer treats their employees with respect and understanding, then employees will answer in the same manner and will try to do all possible to satisfy expectations.

I can outline such values and strength of my leadership style:

  • I value challenge because it is my way to improve.
  • I value my family happiness which is one of my top values that every thing could delete and stop if it could touch this value.
  • I value integrity which in my opinion the most value that I think each leader should have.
  • I value loyalty that understanding loyalty is not the problem; the problem is being able to perform it. In my opinion this value is what I am facing problem with. It makes me feel thinking a lot before all my life decisions.
  • I value wisdom and I belief that it is the key for every situation. In my opinion knowledge lose in front of experiences.
  • First strength is persuasive: a lot of the people around me know this as my strength. I have all the ability and skills to let you believe in something. I use this strength in my life a lot.
  • Second strength. I know how, where, and when to use my skills. Some people think it is not strength, but in my opinion, if you do not know how, where, and when to use your skills, it can be weakness.
  • Third strength is problem-solving. I have all the skills for these skills and have my own strategies to be a good problem-solver person.
  • Fourth strength is trustfulness. People always tell me that I'm a person who let them feel safe and they trust me and I think because my honesty value is the reason.
  • Fifth strength is being a good listener and great speaker. It is one of my leadership strengths that help me a lot as a leader.
