What is CPD And Why It Is Important For You?

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the systematic maintenance and improvement of the knowledge and skills needed for professional performance. This may mean improving current skills, it may mean evolving them to a new level, or it may mean learning new skills that will enable the job role of an employee to improve or prepare them for future promotion.

In most occupations, CPD responsibilities are present. Most companies and organizations are now prioritizing them as they maintain a workforce that is continuously growing.

This means that millions of professionals throughout the UK are required to undertake annual CPD training.

Structured CPD benefit provides workers with a consistent path to success in their current role and future growth. Employees in regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, accountancy, legal work) can lose their operating licenses if their CPD is not protected.

The Continuous Professional Development Process (see figure) indicates that, like many other learning practices, professional development is better viewed as a continuous sequence of activities. The process goes from defining your development needs by scheduling and then performing your learning activities, reflecting on your learning, then applying it, and communicating it with others.

What counts towards my Continuing Professional Development?

Studying a course or engaging in a CPD-certified event will count against the hours of continuing professional development. For example, taking a Level 2 Accounting Diploma would not only enhance your skillset but also count against your CPD hours if you want to develop your financial skills.

Why should I do CPD?

Ensuring you engage in Continuing Professional Development is important. This tells the current and potential employers that at every level, you are a keen and committed person who wants to grow and develop themselves.

Where can I start with CPD?
