Indigo Airline’s Engine Issues

The popular Indian air carrier Indigo Airlines has been in the news for sometimes and because of wrong reasons. It was because many of its flights developed snags in the engine of its Airbus A320 fleet. There were occasions when the plane was airborne, and due to the technical fault in the engine, the flight had to make an emergency landing back to its origin. It happened quite a number of times, which were seen as a compromise on the safety of the passengers by the airlines. With a number of incidents taking place with the same airline fleet, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had to intervene in the matter finally and cracked a whip on Indigo Airlines.

It issued an order to get all snag-ridden Pratt & Whitney’s (PW) engines for Airbus A320 new engine option (NEO) family of planes. The airline was asked to ensure that all the 98 NEO engines that it has currently to be modified to PW engines underneath both wings of the plane by latest January 31st, 2020. The NEOS, which will not meet this demand, shall not be allowed to fly anymore after the deadline is over.

Indigo Airlines is the world’s largest customer for this aircraft, and it still needs over 630 of them, which are yet to receive. The regulatory body has asked to postpone these future deliveries so that the existing 98 NEOS can get the replacement engines.

In a span of few days, the airline has witnessed four in-flight shutdowns (of PW engines) and had to return back to base, which has resulted in serious concern and disruptions as well. Such a thing cannot be allowed to go on indefinitely as it is hazardous for passenger and aircraft safety. With four successive events like this, there is an urgent need of effective action. The DGCA added that they regret the inconvenience, and there is a desperate measure for putting things in order.

The DGCA has also asked to change one engine each of 23 planes rather than 16, which was ordered earlier by November 19th. All these 23 planes have a more problematic type of engine under both of their wings, and the regulator shall let the planes fly only if they get one engine replaced with less snag-prone PW engines.

Indigo Airlines is also directed by DGCA that all of its existing 98 Airbus A320 Neo family planes should be equipped with both modified engines under the wings by January 31st, 2020, for continuing flying the aircraft. Indigo Airlines currently has a fleet of 98 A320 NEO family with around 45% of its engines modified. The airlines are working on both P&W and Airbus on mitigation so that it has sufficient modified spare engines by January 31st, 2020. It has also become a necessity for the airlines as four in-flight snags have already occurred, and if the norms set by the regulator are not met, then many of their planes will be grounded. Besides, it is also necessary for the safety of the plane and the passengers, which cannot be flouted at any cost by any airline.
