India and Pakistan Exchanged Customary List of Prisoners

Many civilian prisoners of both the countries are in the custody of each other country, Indian civilians and fishermen are in the prison of Pakistan and Pakistani civilians and fishermen are in custody of India. A fresh list has been exchanged between the two countries India and Pakistan on Wednesday (01.01.2020), through diplomatic channels, simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad.

This is with respect to the 2008 agreement that each year such lists are exchanged on 1st January and 1st July, every year. So, on Wednesday (01.01.2020), it was exchanged.

India handed over to the lists of 267 Pakistan civilian prisoners and 99 fishermen to Pakistan who is in India’s custody. Similarly, Pakistan had shared the lists of 55 civilian prisoners and 227 fishermen in their custody, who are Indians or believed-to-be Indians.

The Government has called Pakistan for the release of Indian civilian prisoners, missing Indian defense personnel and fishermen from their custody and send them back to India, along with their boats. In this perspective, Pakistan was asked to speed up the release and returning them back of 4 Indian civilian prisoners and 126 Indian fishermen to India whose nationality has already been confirmed and conveyed to Pakistan. In addition to it, Pakistan has also been asked to provide immediate consular access to 14 believed-to-be Indian civilian prisoners and 100 Indian fishermen who are still in Pakistan’s custody.

The Government has also wanted Pakistan to accelerate the grant of visas to the members of the medical experts team and smooth the progress of their visit to Pakistan to assess the mental condition of believed-to-be Indian prisoners of unsound mind, lodged in different jails of Pakistan; also wanted to organize early visit of the Joint Judicial Committee to Pakistan and to organize early visit of the 4-member team to Karachi in connection with release and return of 22 Indian fishing boats.

It was also informed to them that India had always shown concerned to all humanitarian matters and dedicated to addressing them on priority, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other’s country. India has also advised Pakistan to rush for the necessary action at its end to authenticate the nationality status of 82 Pakistan prisoners, including fishermen, whose returning is pending only due to nationality confirmation by Pakistan.
