LSU vs. Clemson National Championship Preview:

LSU will play Clemson for the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 13. Both teams are 14-0 going into the game. LSU is hoping to win its first CFP title (and first national title since the 2007 season, in the BCS era). Clemson is trying to win its second consecutive championship and third of the CFP era.

As the Tigers defeat Alabama 44-16 in Santa Clara, California, to claim the latest title, Clemson is the defending national champion. It was the second title of Clemson in three seasons, as in 2016 the Tigers also beat the Tide. Clemson and Alabama have met three times in the short history of the game in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Now that we’ve completed a halfway dramatic set of semifinals for College Football Playoff, the match is set for what might be a great game for the championship. Five quick thoughts on the very long run-up to the New Orleans Clemson-LSU:

1. The QB match is a historic event. Joe Burrow from LSU may be authoring the best season we’ve ever seen in sports. Trevor Lawrence from Clemson may be the founder of the best college career we’ve ever seen. Which one is going to taste defeat at last?

Even if it doesn’t seem possible anymore, Burrow continues to outdo himself. On Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl, the landslide Heisman Trophy winner dropped season-highs in yards (493), touchdown passes (seven) and efficiency rating (239.77), and there is no indication of how high the numbers would have gone if he played all the game. He smashed in the process a number of playoff records.

Lawrence displayed all his talents against Saturday’s Ohio State — arm, legs, mind, guts — and he needed them all to pull the victory out. He is currently working on a record of 201 straight attempts without one after being maligned early in the season for throwing too many interceptions.

2. Clemson is fortunate in between games there is an exceptionally long break. The Tigers (upstate version) will come out of a semi-final slugfest, while the LSU will basically come out of a spa.

And offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger will have some time to grieve his daughter-in-law Carley McCord’s amazing death in a Peach Bowl day plane crash.

3. In Clemson, Ohio State exposed some defensive deficiencies that could not be exploited by anyone in the ACC. LSU could and will probably benefit from some of the same problems.

Clemson turned over season-highs across the board on Saturday: points (23), total yards (516), rushing yards (196) and yards (320). The only consolation in the red zone was delays, and a few were more due than anything else to the fault of the Ohio State. Coordinator Brent Venables eventually dialed up some things that created problems for the Buckeyes, but early on it was close to a rout.

The issues start at the front, where Ohio State has given Justin Fields quarterback plenty of room in the pocket against a youthful Clemson pass rush that has averaged its fewest bags per game since 2013. The offensive line from LSU won the Joe Moore Award as the best unit in the sport, and in a season with 518 pass attempts, it only allowed 30 bags.

And while the Clemson back seven is both talented and experienced, they have missed their share of individual matchups against the winners of the Ohio State. The challenge for the orange tigers now is that the receiving body of LSU is even bigger.

4. LSU can not sit around waiting for Clemson to beat himself because it is not going to be done by the Tigers (upstate version).

Since Oct. 19, they have had only one turnover, and that was an interception thrown in a Wake Forest loss by backup quarterback Chase Brice. They are a plus-17 turnover margin over the last nine days, and since September they have had no negative turnover margin in a game.

As noted earlier, at Louisville since the first quarter, Lawrence hasn’t thrown a pick. And since Oct. 12, Clemson has not lost a fumble. In the fewest penalty yards, the orange tigers also rank 21st nationally, while the LSU is 85th.

Clemson is at a plus-five turnover in their last three CFP games and has only one giveaway.

5. LSU must remain grounded. Playing for the national championship is the same-old for Clemson, who plays in the title game in the last five seasons for the fourth time. The Tigers (version of Bayou) have to handle the hoopla and the backyard game.

The position of Louisiana will definitely help in terms of the potential advantage of the home field, but it will also lead to the blocking out of the external noise teams.

It would also be dangerous to have any potential overconfidence from beating the tar from a truly inferior Oklahoma team.

LSU vs. Clemson Match-Up

Burrow went 29-for-39 for 493 yards and seven touchdowns (with another score on the ground) in Oklahoma’s 63-28 drubbing in the CFP semifinals. This improved his numbers to 5,208 passing yards for the season with 55 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Whew. His seven touchdown passes all came to tie the FBS record for touchdown passes in a bowl game in the first half (Central Michigan’s Cooper Rush in the Bahamas Bowl in 2014).

Burrow gets help from WRs Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, together with RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who both have 18 touchdowns this season.

It’s a lot to do with that.

But if a team can do that, it’s a top candidate for Clemson. Not only are the Tigers the defending national champions, but they fought back in the semifinals, 29-23, from a 16-point deficit to rally past Ohio State, with the defense turning things around after a rough start. And Clemson’s own stars are offensive.

Trevor Lawrence had 259 yards in front of OSU and 107 rushing yards, with the Buckeyes shocking a spectacular 67-yard touchdown run.

Expect another game to finish, but LSU seems to have one edge: Burrow. LSU has played (and looked) better and better, irrespective of the test, the way this season has gone. Clemson’s going to have to put pressure on Burrow — and that may not be enough.
