Most college students share the same goal. That is, they each want to end up with a rewarding career.

Career services departments and employment specialists at most college campuses share that goal as well and offer a variety of services to help students get there.

If you're wondering what to do after graduation, be sure to check out your local college's career services department. Here are five services you'll want to consider.

1. Career Decision Making

A career services counsellor can help you choose a career, even if you have no clue what you want to be when you grow up. They'll look at your values, personality, interests, and abilities and, based on the outcome, will recommend some career options. Additionally, a career counsellor will help you determine what courses or programs to take at college if you already have a career in mind. Career Services at CDI College in Toronto assists students with the job hunt for up to six months after they graduate.

2. Resume and Cover Letter Writing

Career services offices help students write their resumes and cover letters. Reeves College students in Calgary, and graduates, have access to more than 600 resumes and cover letter templates, tailored for over 50 different industries. Even students studying Reeves College online courses are welcome to use this service. Students enrolled in CDI College programs, including CDI online courses and CDI short courses, will learn how to create personal marketing tools for themselves, including business cards, practical thank-you notes, and persuasive cover letters.

3. Job Interview Prep

Some career services offices may sponsor job interview workshops, which include what to wear and what questions to expect. They’ll even provide mock interview sessions so you can practice your skills. The career services department at Medix College trains students in all Medix College courses how to conduct an employment interview and how to appropriately follow-up. CDI College employment specialists offer workshops to help build students’ confidence in finding the hidden job market. Students will learn how to turn a phone call into an interview and an interview into a job offer.

 4. Networking

Career services can also help you locate networking events, where you can connect with professionals in your potential career. Alumni, especially, want to help students connect with opportunities and are often more than willing to offer advice, and connections at their place of work. Reeves College has a network of employees across Alberta and continues to develop relationships with companies who have previously hired graduates of Reeves College Programs. These contacts will help when your job search begins.

5. Internships

While there may be a separate department that handles internships, career services often work hand-in-hand with companies on the lookout for interns. Students in all Medix College programs must complete an "externship" in the field as a part of their curriculum. Medix College of Healthcare employment partners include CAMH, Toronto General Hospital, and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Employment specialists are available to help all students reach their career goals and keep them excited about your future. When it's time to turn your training into a successful career, don't underestimate the importance of a college's career services department.
