What are the basics of Injection molding?

Injection molding  is a manufacturing process commonly used for fabricating items from plastic trinkets and toys to automotive body parts, cell phone cases, water bottles, and containers. It is commonly used in large production processes where the same part is created thousand times.

Use of injection molding:

  1. Injection Molding produces low scrap rates relative to traditional manufacturing processes like CNC machine which cut away substantial percentages of an original plastic block or sheet.
  2. Injection Molding is very repeatable. This is a wonderful characteristic when trying to produce brand consistency and part reliability.

SOME OF THE CONSIDERATIONS FOR INJECTION MOLDING:

Design considerations:

To design the part from day one with injection molding in mind. Make sure to design the mold tool to prevent defects during the production process.

Financial considerations:

A large initial investment is required in preparing a product for injection molding manufacturing. Determine the number of parts produced consider the cost of design, testing, production, etc.

Production considerations:

Design your part to minimize assembly. To the extent that you can design, assembly out of the process you will save significant money on the cost of labour.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF INJECTION MOLDING:

  • Large undercuts require an experienced design to avoid additional costs to the project.
  • Tools are typically made out of steel can be difficult to make changes. This is extremely difficult and in many cases and might mean needing to scrap the tool.
  • Two of the major disadvantages to injection molding are the high tooling costs and large required lead times.
  • Large parts cannot be produced via injection molding as a single piece.  For example of a large injection moulded part, consider the shopping carts at Target.
