Difference Between HT and LT Cables

Cables are the most critical part of the entire power transmission systems as cables are the physical mediums used to transmit power from point A to point B. All aspects of the industry & even our homes use some or the other type of cable which is accountable for the safe transfer of power to our locality, bringing that power in our homes, as well as to run our electrical gadgets.

Cables can be classified as Low tension or low voltage cables & High tension or high voltage cables on a very broad level for better understanding. Many cable makers are involved in the manufacturing of both Low tension and High tension cables and most of them sport identical capabilities and specifications. The categorization basically boils down to the specifications. Cables which have 3.3kV to 33kV rating can be categorized as high tension cables & cables sporting a rating of 1.1kV can be sorted as low tension cables. Some cables with specialized applications come under the EHV or extra high voltage cables category.

Construction of these cables is identical to every other cable. Basic parts of these cables are the conductors, inner and outer sheaths, insulating layers, filler material, armor and copper taping. A few cables which fall under the class of power transmission cables, but transmit the power via over head mediums are also LT cables popularly known as aerial bunched cables. These cables are safe, reliable, have very less power losses, less cost of operation and maintenance. Such cables are perfect option for installations in semi urban, rural, forest area or regions with difficult terrain. Such aerial bunched cables are manufactured and tested according to IS:14255 & other specifications. These cables have amazing protection against line and ground faults.

Typically HT cables have a simple and tough construction. At the core a copper or aluminium conductor can be found. Over the top of this conductor, inner semicon is placed which is then wrapped with XLPE insulating material. Outer semicon wraps the XLPE insulation. Finally the conductor is wrapped by a copper metal tape. All the other conductor cores are wrapped in the similar way.
