First time clans was welcomed into the Edinburgh Castle

On Monday 8 May 2017, more than 30 clan members and clan wives went to the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle to mark an extremely important occasion in the history books of Scotland. Tattoo fans can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

It was the first time that clans from Scotland have been welcomed into the castle since the Highland clans marched to the city of Edinburgh to besiege the castle during the Jacobite uprisings in 1745.

The rally was organized by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which celebrated the celebration its own ties to the Scottish diaspora this year.

The gathering of the Scottish diaspora community would be the only time clans have been openly hosted in one of Scotland's oldest fortresses. Clan members were treated to a guided tour of the medieval surroundings of the Great Hall where their ancestors attempted to enter, courtesy of Edinburgh Castle Governor, Major General Mike Riddell-Webster, and organized by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

In September 1745, over 900 members of the Highland clan traveled to the city of Edinburgh to besiege the castle. Although they managed to capture Edinburgh and Holyrood, in an extremely symbolic gesture, they never managed to capture the castle as a general guest, governor of the time, would not cede the castle to Bonnie Prince Charlie and his men.

Sir Malcolm MacGregor:

Sir Malcolm MacGregor, the organizer of the Permanent Council of Scottish Chiefs, said: "It is a great honor for 57 clans and chiefs to participate in such a prestigious event as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo this year.

There will be representatives of clans from around the world, consistent with the high international profile of Tattoo and the global nature of today's clan network."

Fiona Hyslop:

Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture and External Affairs said: "Scotland's history and heritage are a key attraction for visitors to Scotland, no more than in 2017, the year of history, heritage and archeology.

Clans are an integral part of our rich heritage, their stories shaping Scotland. The clans are arousing considerable interest from the international diaspora and I salute their involvement in this year's Tattoo. "

Brigadier David Allfrey, CEO and producer of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, said, "I am delighted that we are welcoming clan leaders and their clan members to the Great Hall in August - 57 clans will be represented!

I am very grateful for the encouragement of the Governor of Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Ministers, Historic Environment Scotland and the Permanent Council of Scottish Chiefs.

Everyone has been extremely supportive of this initiative which, I believe, offers a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the links between great Scottish families and their friends and relatives around the world. "
