What is GLUTAMINA? Does it help to recover after exercise?

Do you know the benefits of Glutamina for athletes? Especially for endurance and ultra-deep sports such as cycling, running, triathlon and swimming. In this article we explain what Glutamina is and its role in sports.

The Glutamina is a neutral amino acid not essential  of natural origin. It is found in protein-rich foods such as beef, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy products and in plant-based foods such as raw spinach, raw parsley and cabbage.


Its most outstanding features are:

It is an important component of proteins.

It is a means of transporting nitrogen between the tissues that helps to 'clean' some ammonia tissues.
It is important for the stabilization of blood pH, and in the biosynthesis of the antioxidant glutathione.
Glutamina is the most abundant free amino acid in skeletal muscle and blood plasma:

Skeletal muscle is the main tissue involved in the synthesis of Glutamina and is responsible for releasing Glutamina in the bloodstream.
While leukocytes use Glutamina to provide the optimal energy and conditions for cell proliferation.

Glutamina in sports

The prolonged exercise is associated with a decrease in Glutamina concentration in skeletal muscle and plasma . This decrease in the availability of Glutamina could jeopardize immune function.

High load training periods are associated with a reduction in plasma Glutamina concentrations and it is thought that this may be partly responsible for the apparent immunosuppression in many endurance athletes. However, the mechanisms that lead to the supposed anabolic effects of Glutamina are still being studied.


The consumption of Glutamina supplements is unlikely to provide a remarkable benefit in restoring an athlete's fluid balance or in preventing immunosuppression after exercise. However, there is evidence to suggest that Glutamina has an important role in stimulating anabolic processes for muscle recovery , including muscle glycogen and protein synthesis .(WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRADO)

The intake of Glutamina supplements is recommended just after training and optionally at 90 minutes of training.
