Confidence, confidence, dry and secure, Raise your hand, raise your hand, if you're Sure!"

Funny thing how commercial jingles burrow deep into our subconscious minds. Almost two decades ago this catchy company's slogan aired on television regularly. Interestingly enough, I woke yesterday morning long before the sun crested the horizon, humming the jingle's tune. For whatever reason, a deodorant advertisement from the 80's stirred me from slumber.

Notice the key encouraging words in phrase one: "Confidence" and "Secure." Call me crazy, but it takes a little more than a roll-on, stick, or spray to trigger confidence and security in my life. And for a moment, travel back with me to the encounter between David and the champion Goliath. Can you imagine the shepherd boy dipping his head to his armpit, sniffing, smiling, then charging to the battle line, shouting, "Victory is mine. I'm sporting Old Spice." Or, "Bad news for you Goliath, I still have 6 hours left on this 8 hour deodorant!" No, the scenario's not fathomable. David's confidence stemmed from an unwavering faith in God. Remember his words to Saul, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." gentle giant god of war

From the text in I Samuel, we discover Saul dressed David in his own battle gear; the young boy stumbled around like the tin man after standing in a gully washer. He shrugged out of the king's armor and jogged down to the brook instead. He selected five smooth stones, slipped them into his pouch, and approached the giant. Some question David's confidence in God because he chose to collect five projectiles instead of one. Well, there's possibly a couple of reasons for that decision. Number one, the Scriptures seem to hint that Goliath had four brothers.

II Samuel 21:15-22 shares the following: "Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines, and David waxed faint. And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. (Skip to verse 18) And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff whose spear was a like a weaver's beam. And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he was also born to the giant. (Skip to 22) These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

Possibly someone from the Israelite camp shared intelligence with David, warning him of other giants lumbering around the camp. Maybe, that's why David collected five smooth stones, one for each of the gargantuan Philistines. gentle giant god of war

On the other hand, maybe David chose five stones to be prepared. Convinced of God's pending victory, David didn't know if one stone sufficed or that it might take several shots to topple the mighty warrior. In fact, throughout the Bible, God instructs us to be prepared...to be ready. Several Scriptures challenge the people of God to be prepared:
