Causes of Organ Donation Shortage

The main cause of organ shortage is the unavailability of adequate donors, and it is the biggest challenge faced by the medical field today.

In this article, I'm going to highlight certain causes of organ donation shortage.

Organ transplantation has advanced in the last five decades from primitive therapeutic treatment attempts to those that are accepted and broadly sought as a form of treatment. The major challenge in the transplantation field is to overcome the shortage of donors and to devise new ways to treat diseases that currently have ineffective management.

Moreover, the immune system plays a substantial challenge to the success of clinical transplantation. For the majority of patients, treatment with a combination of immunosuppressive drugs are crucial to prevent organ rejection. However, these drugs have some sort of side-effects in the long run. For that reason, the least possible use of these drugs is necessary for the immune system of the patient’s body.

One of the major reasons for the donor’s shortage in our country is “myths and misconceptions” that are spreading in the society regarding organ donation and this negatively impacts the whole concept. As a result, many fallacies are prevalent in the society that is creating negative attitudes towards organ donation. A superstition such as born with a missing organ (that has been donated) in the next birth. and, altering with the body will not free their dead relatives from the cycle of death & birth, are some of the prevalent superstitions.

The shortage of a sufficient number of transplant centers along with sufficient staff, who are adequately educated and knowledgeable with the procedures required to conduct an organ donation program, is also acting as a key barrier towards the success ofthe deceased donation program.

Furthermore, the lack of sufficient dialysis programs, research, and effective national health insurance plans also act as a major challenge. Also, the majority of hospitals do not have a clear protocol for proclaiming brain death. Some of them also do not have successful transplant coordinators who can compassionately address the potential donor patients, or the relatives of a deceased donor and seek approval for organ donation. Even the medical community has very little awareness of executing a deceased donation program.

The Bottomline

Organ donation is the most valuable gift you can give to someone and it is the only way you can survive even after your death. A large number of people have to come forward and support this humanitarian cause then only we can overcome the problem of organ shortage (for transplantation).
