While many people work to live their life only for themselves, some go the extra mile to work for the community and society. It is not very often that we come across people who work to bring change for the people around them. It is a selfless dead and requires the utmost amount of empathy for people. Taking a stand for the people who cannot take a stand for themselves is a bold move and only few people work to achieve this level of empathy.
In a world full of selfish people, a man who brought light upon the unaddressed issues, L. David Patterson, is an American politician and entrepreneur, currently serving as the Treasurer of the City of Hawthorne, California. A member of the Democratic Party, Patterson was elected as City Treasurer in November 2013, becoming the first African-American to be elected to that office. He repeated that success in 2018, being re-elected to another four-year term, winning 70% of the vote.
Patterson has volunteered his services to various non-profit organizations, for the betterment of his community, for the past 20 years, including the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce, the Hawthorne Economic Development Council, and the Hawthorne Teen Center, and is an active supporter of the non-profit organization Shoes for Our Youth.
The reason Mr. Patterson was re-elected as City Treasurer by such a large margin in 2018 was also because of his outstanding service to his community. He listened to people in his community and worked to serve their needs. He is famous for his bold stances when representing the people of Hawthorne. As City Treasurer, Patterson is responsible for updating the investment policy, the safekeeping of the city’s finances, and the investment of the city’s surplus funds. Under David’s tenure as the City Treasurer, the City of Hawthorne has experienced tremendous savings in banking fees and an increase of over 400% in its investment returns.
The 41-years old, Mr. Patterson received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Entrepreneurial Studies from the University of California, after first completing his Associate of Arts degree in English from El Camino Community College. He continued his education by studying Industrial & Organizational Psychology at Capella University, where he received his Master of Science degree. For his master’s thesis, Patterson focused on strategic employee selection to reduce turnover and maximize productivity in small businesses. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. in Business Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and is expected to complete that degree in 2021.
David’s educational and professional background has uniquely prepared him to serve his community in a relevant and impactful way. His belief that the learning cycle never stops has driven him to continue his education, even after already achieving so many successes.
David is currently working as a business consultant at his firm The Patterson Group, and as an Investment Advisor Representative with Transamerica Financial, Inc. As a financial advisor David has taken a special interest in helping people understand and improve their credit through his firm, LA Credit Guy. And in a consulting capacity he is currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer for Del Rey Law Group.
Previously, He has worked at Westwood Financial Corp as an Acquisitions/Dispositions Analyst, at World Group Securities as the Branch Office Manager and as a Real Estate Broker at Keller Williams Commercial Real Estate. The companies he has consulted for included Quick Mart Stores, where he served as Vice President of Operations, helping them to expand from 3 to 10 locations within one year.
