Chaff cutter is one of the effective machines used for cutting fodder like straw or hay into small pieces for mixing together with forage. In general Processing includes the operation that improves the quality of farm products.
Based on cutting mechanism chaff cutter is divided into two types:
- Cylinder type
- Flywheel type
Cylinder type: It has knives which are spirally arranged on a revolving cylinder. The cutting head of a lawn mower is somewhat like this arrangement. Usually four knives are spirally fixed. It is mostly used on power chaff cutters. Blades are easily sharpened with a grinder.
Flywheel type: Flywheel type cutting unit has a number of knives. These knives are arranged radially on the side of a big flywheel which is usually made of cast iron. Straight knives are used on power chaff cutters and curved knives are used on hand chaff cutters. There are usually two knives on hand chaff cutters, whereas two to six knives on power chaff cutters.
Based on the dropping position of cut chaff, this machine may be of three types: Let-Fall type, Throw-Away type and Blow-up type.
In Left-Fall type, the cut fodder is dropped down to the bottom of the chaff cutter. In throw-away type the cut fodder is stored at the front ward of the chaff cutter and in blow-up type the cut fodder is blown up through the blow-up pipe.
Based on the source of power it may be: Manually operated, Animal operated and power operated machine.

To such men as Meikle and Menzies belong the credit of making a start towards perfecting a corn thresher back in the 18th century, but the results of their efforts while spelling progress, did not anywhere near meet the requirements.A Scotchman named Michael Menzies was one of the first of a splendid group of men who experimented with threshing machines and his efforts, while not crowned with complete success, are worthy of notice as paving the way for subsequent experiments.
His machine,which was brought out in 1732, consisted of a number of flails attached to a rotating cylinder driven by water power.
The frequent breaking of the flails, however, demonstrated the fact that the really successful corn sheller machine would not make use of the flail motion in its original form.The next threshing machine of which we have record was also invented by a Scotch farmer who succeeded in improving upon the Menzies’ machine by constructing a rotary cylinder armed with beaters which for the first time correctly applied the principle of flail threshing to a power driven machine.
