Dell XPS 13 9380 (Intel i5-8265U, 8GB RAM)

Dell's XPS 13 can be the very best laptop under $1,000 that you can buy right now. Its display is 13 inches on the diagonal. Still, it has bezels, meaning the entire package is smaller than most other laptops that are 13-inch -- making it super portable, thin, and light. Its trackpad and keyboard that is backlit are a few of the best available on the current market, and its battery life is sufficient to get you based on our tests. It comes with USB-C interfaces (so you will need adapters for the previous USB-A peripherals and flash drives), along with also the added McAffee junkware is disappointing. Still, these microscopic flaws are simple enough to overlook when all else is so good.

We tested Dell's config using an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, along with a 256GB SSD, which technically comes in a bit over a grand--but the excess cost made it the most powerful notebook we analyzed, and since none of its components are still upgradeable except the SSD, buying this step-up config will likely save you money in the long run. (Plus, we've seen it move on sale for under a grand in case you are willing to wait.) If you're on a tight budget and require a laptop today, consider checking out last year's model with similar specs, or--in case you do not need that much power--drop down to the build with an i3, 4GB of RAM, along with a 128GB SSD. Just be cautious, because 8GB of RAM is almost a necessity thanks to memory-hungry browsers such as Chrome. You can't update your RAM down the line--however, you may swap out the SSD should you find you need more storage.
