Marijuana Drying and Curing: The Top Tips

It’s one thing to know how to grow marijuana, but once your successfully grown plants yield those potent buds, you have to dry and cure them. Drying and curing marijuana results in buds that taste great, guarantee a fantastic high, and ones that are mold-resistant. In this guide, we will cover all the top tips that you must know to dry and cure your marijuana well. So, let’s get started.

#1: Let the Air Reach Every Inch of the Buds

While wet buds will dry naturally, natural drying does not always mean even drying, and even drying can make a lot of difference in the end product. The best way to dry your buds is to keep them in a place that has ample ventilation. There should be unobstructed airflow, which will ensure that the air reaches every inch of the buds. Experienced growers typically employ methods such as stringing up the trimmed branches and using wire racks for drying small branches and individual buds.

If you decide to use wire racks for drying your buds, you should remember to keep flipping the buds every once in a while so that there is no flattening. The ideal indoor environment for drying your buds involves a dark room, great air circulation, and 45 – 55% relative humidity.

#2: Be Patient

Drying buds can be a time-consuming process and if you want your buds to be completely dry and ready to be cured, you should give them at least seven weeks. Denser buds can take up to twelve weeks to dry completely and large branches also take their sweet time to dry.

Here are the signs that would tell you that your buds are dried and ready to be cured:

  • The buds would shrink considerably from their original size.
  • The buds would weigh considerably less than they did when they were bigger, primarily due to the loss of a great amount of water.

To be completely sure, you should try bending a small branch. If the branch bends, it means that the buds are not completely dry. However, if it snaps, you can move on to curing your buds.

#3: Don’t Waste Time with the Curing

Curing the buds is something that you should do as soon as the buds are completely dry as keeping dry buds exposed increases the risk of fungus and mold growth. To cure your buds, follow these steps:

  • Place the dry buds in jars that are big and wide-mouthed. Ideally, you should use jam or mason jars.
  • Depending on how many buds you have, you should fill only 3/4th of the jars so that there is enough air for the buds to breathe. Not leaving enough air may result in mildew or mold growth.
  • Store the jars in a dark and dry environment and check the buds every day.
  • As you check the buds, leave the jars open for some time to ensure sufficient air exchange.
  • If you spot a bud that shows mold or mildew infestation, remove it immediately. Not removing such buds can spread the infestation to other buds.

#4: Be Patient, Again

For your buds to be completely cured and ready to be consumed, you have to be patient once more, as you were during the drying process. While a lot of people only let their buds cure for around two weeks before they start rolling joints and filling bowls, it’s best to let the buds cure for at least a full month. If you have patience in abundance, you can even let it cure for two months.

Letting your buds cure for one or two months will really bring out their aroma and they will also taste rich. Once the buds are cured, seal the jars and open them only when you need to crush the buds for a marvelous high.

By keeping these four tips in mind, you will know not just how to grow marijuana, but also how to properly dry and cure those brilliant buds.
