An Analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter”

Edgar Allan Poe’s  “The Purloined Letter” is generally considered his best short story. It was first published in “The Gift” in January 1845. Poe wrote three detective stories, or "tales of ratiocination", featuring C. Auguste Dupin and Dupin's makes his third and final appearance in "The Purloined Letter". An analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” discusses the plot, major characters, and themes in this short story.

A brief summary of this short story should begin an analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter”. Afterward, an analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” should provide a description and analysis of the story’s main character, C. Auguste Dupin.  The main theme about using intuition vs. logic should then be analyzed in an analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter”. In addition, the title of the story should be examined in an analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter”. The story could have been named "The Stolen Letter", yet, the term “purloin”, which has an important nuance in its meaning, i.e., to take something by a breach of trust, was used instead and thus is significant. Finally, an analysis of Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” should look at the literary significance of the story to later detective stories as well as criticism the short story has received.
