What is ganciclovir?

Ganciclovir is an antiviral drug, used to treat and prevent symptoms of spread or infection in people with weak immune systems (AIDS patients or organ transplant recipients). In addition, Ganciclovir is also used to treat a number of other viral diseases that help ensure the health of the patient.

Point

Treatment of retinitis virus-induced retinitis in immunocompromised patients, including those with AIDS, and a number of other infections of cytoplasmic viruses including pneumonia, colitis and esophagitis. Prevention of CMV infection in organ transplant patients at risk of infection.

Contraindicated

Hypersensitivity to aciclovir or ganciclovir.

The absolute number of neutrophils is less than 500 / mm3, the number of platelets is less than 25,000 / mm3.

Exercise caution when using Ganciclovir

With caution in patients with renal impairment, the dose should be adjusted according to serum creatinine clearance. Do not give rapid intravenous injection or whole dose at once.

Caution with patients with leukopenia, or a history of neutropenia reaction when taking the drug, patients treated with bone marrow suppressants, radiation therapy.

Attention should be paid to the appropriate dose for the elderly.
Side effects when using Ganciclovir

Ganciclovir may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

• nausea, vomiting
• diarrhea
• constipation
• stomachache
• Burp
• loss of appetite
• change the ability to taste food
• Dry mouth
• Mouth Sores
• unusual dreams
• nervous
• Disturbance
• sweat
• water discharge
• joint or muscle pain or cramping

Ganciclovir drug interactions

Drug interactions can alter the ability of the drug to work or increase the effects of side effects. This document does not include the full range of possible drug interactions.

Write a list of all the medicines you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter and supplements) and show it to your doctor or pharmacist. Do not arbitrarily take, discontinue or change the dosage of the drug without a doctor's permission.

Before taking ganciclovir, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:

• Zidovudine (Retrovir, AZT);
• Didanosine (Videx);
• Probenecid (Benemid);
• Imipenem-cilastatin (Primaxin).

Does food or alcohol interact with ganciclovir?

Certain medicines should not be taken with meals or at the same time as certain foods because of the possible interaction. Alcohol and tobacco may also interact with certain drugs. Consult your health professional about taking medication with food, alcohol and tobacco.

Ganciclovir may interact with your health condition.

Your medical condition may affect the use of this medicine. Tell your doctor if you have any health problems, especially:

• Kidney disease. Ganciclovir can accumulate in the blood if you have kidney disease, increasing your risk of side effects.
• Low platelet count.
• Low white blood cell count. Ganciclovir can make these conditions worse.
