Borderlands 3’s Bounty of Blood DLC May Break Traditional DLC Patterns

Borderlands 3’s Bounty of Blood: A Fistful of Redemption DLC is coming out for the players in a really short time. But there is a high probability that it might break the pattern and design that other DLCs are known for and follow.

It’s just a small wait for the new DLC to come out, and it will be taking players to a brand new ton (Vestige) on a brand new planet (Gehenna) with brand new rides (jet-beasts) fighting brand new enemies (Devil Riders) with a cast of brand new characters. Till now, Borderland has followed a pattern while launching DLCs for the game, for example, Mad Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot is based on a heist movie; Guns, Love, and Tentacles captures the spirit of the Lovecraftian Horror; and Bounty of Blood rides to the Wild West.

This has been one of the major qualities of the themes of the past DLCs, but the next DLC coming out for the game is poised to break the stereotypes and past terms. And if the clips and trailers are any hints, then it already has. Following this, then Bounty of Blood will be the odd one out among the DLC.

THE BORDERLANDS 3 DLC PATTERN

Every single DLC that Borderlands 3 has released has the solid pattern of an earlier playable character coming back as an NPC.  Mad Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot saw the return of Timothy, a.k.a Jack’s Doppelganger from the Pre-Sequel. Guns, Love, and Tentacles saw Gaige take on the role of Wainwright and Hammerlock’s Wedding Planner, and therefore it is understandable that the third Borderlands 3 DLC will feature another ex-playable character. And there have been a lot of in-game hints that it might be Salvador, as there’s a bounty for him posted in the second DLC towards the end, and this will no doubt fit into the on-going theme, but there are a few reasons to believe otherwise.

WHY BOUNTY OF BLOOD MAY END UP BREAKING THIS?

Probably the most striking thing about the upcoming DLC is the lack of announcement of the next “playable character turned NPC.” The past two DLCs were not shy with showing off their returning characters, with Timothy and Gaige being confirmed the same day as the DLC. If the studio really did want to keep it quiet, it would have done it with the other ones too. So the question is that even if Salvador is the antagonistic leader of the Devil Riders, why is his role being kept a secret?

Enforcing this view, the announcement from Gearbox that the players will have an “entirely new cast” of characters interact with, and this means renewing an atmosphere that is already really concise. To be kept in mind that just because of the announcement that none of the familiar faces will pop up to add that sense of familiarity, but there is still a chance that it will happen.  But all signs seem to point to Borderlands 3 DLC 3 being completely cut off from the past and future.

BORDERLANDS 3 DLC 4 MAY MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Borderlands 3 does like a good tease, and just like it did with DLC 2 where it left a hint and a small teaser for “Bounty of Blood,” which was the third DLC. During the announcement of the third DLC, a teaser for the fourth and last DLC for the season was shown. The teaser hints and almost shows the return of Krieg and a psychological approach to his broken psyche, perhaps due to the events of the base game. In this way, it may walk Krieg through the loss of Maya, much like the Bunkers and Badasses DLC was a coping mechanism for Tiny Tina after Roland’s death.

The teaser for the final DLC put a spin on things, and what it points at is that the fourth DLC will be following the pattern of it having a playable character as an NPC. But what does this show about DLC number 3? Although there are some good and even promising reasons for the repeat of the trend and a character returning as an NPC. Borderland 3 players should not bet on it as it might go in any direction.
