How to Gain the Maximum from the Language Lab in School

A language lab or classroom network set-up is undoubtedly the most complete method for the language immersion available to the students. Other methods which can be adopted as the online or blended learning language training are also very valuable in the development of languages. But language labs are more beneficial given their advanced features and functionalities.

Language lab in school have become extremely popular and valued at colleges and universities given the students a structured eLearning environment which can be relied upon. New technologies are increasingly more present in the classrooms as they not only facilitate teacher’s role but also offer students opportunities to practice more and remain up-to-date with the exercises found in language books with the help of play-based learning.

1. Language lab is practical knowledge center
While studying theory is important, even more important is the practical knowledge of the same. These labs allow kids to practice in fun and interactive way in order to acquire the four main language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.

2. Students learn much faster
Practice leads to language learning success. The courses are interactive which help students learn much faster than in the regular classroom setting. Language labs allow students to practice the language with a much wider variety of exercises and activities based on the computer. Learning occurs in a structured way, and in real context and visually attractive way which immerses the student in the language learning environment. The students watch videos, practice their pronounciation through the speech recogniser and also learn new vocabulary.

4. Teacher’s role becomes more important
Contrary to the popular belief that technology will eliminate the importance of teachers, language labs provide supplementary materials which only facilitate role of instructor rather than compete with the same. Teacher then focuses on important parts of the course rather than waste time explaining things.

5. Increased diversity in the classroom
Language laboratories provide teachers attention to students, especially in the case of schools, with different levels because as the interactive course, language labs are tailored to the individual needs of the students. Thanks to the monitoring and evaluation in real time, the teacher knows exactly what course objectives pose major difficulties for the student time.

6. Optimise computing resources
Both universities and colleges have classroom with computers there for students to complete school works or study other subjects. The faculty computer labs or office computers for administration are also present. Language labs are essentially recycling resources in educational institute already and have to adapt to the same language course.

7. Fosters communication in the classroom
Language labs also encourage communication between students and teachers as well as student-student with activities and exercises essential to the oral communication and understanding of the language. The tools available for creating groups, hosting conversations via chat, and also promote messages on the board.
