BIRDS WITH MOST UNUSUAL BEAKS

Birds are the most beautiful creatures around. They are exquisitely formed. Vivid wings and beguiling feathers make them all the more attractive. But as our nature is the most creative phenomenon, few of these birds have very fascinating beaks which definitely excites one to go on a Bird Photo Tour too! To your surprise, few of them are mention here-

SWORD BILLED HUMIING BIRD

These are the species of hummingbirds originating from South America. These hummingbirds are the only species of birds which have their bill longer than the rest of their body!  Their tongues are too, unusually, very long. As these hummingbirds’ beaks are very long, they groom themselves with their feet. From base of the bill to the tail tip, this specie is about 14 cm in length. This hummingbird weighs for about 10–15 grams and is one of the largest species of hummingbirds.

AMERICAN WHITW PELICANS

This American white pelican is a large, aquatic soaring bird belongs to North America. They are about 50 to 70 inches in length. They weigh between 3.5 and 13.6 kg. These birds’ bill is very huge and flat on the top with an unusual large throat sac below

ROSEATE SPOONBILL

The roseate spoonbill is a wading bird from the ibis and spoonbill family. It is native to South America and mostly east of the Andes. The roseate spoonbill is 71–86 cm long with a 120–133 cm wingspan approx. They are in pink colored and their bill is grayish and spoon-shaped. This spoon-shaped bill allows them to sift easily through mud

RHINOCEROS HORNBILL

These hornbills are one of the largest hornbills. The adults resemble swans in size of a swan, 91–122 cm long and weighing 2–3 kg. They live for 90 years. The bird has white under parts, especially to the tail.

BLACK SKIMMER

The black skimmer is from North and South America. The black skimmer is the largest of the three skimmer species. Measuring 40–50 cm long, its wingspan is about 107–127 cm. The basal half of this bill is red, the rest mainly black and the lower mandible is much-elongated. Skimmers have a light graceful flight with steady beats of their long wings. They feed on fish, insects, crustaceans and mollusks.
