Pre-employment/ Re-engagement medical examination

These pre-employment medical examinations and re-engagement medical examinations are essential tools to determine whether an employee is fit to perform his job without risk to himself or others. Whatever the industry, the health and safety of your staff is essential and is key to optimizing the company's productivity.

Typically, such medical examinations will involve assessing the individual's medical background, as well as check for any chronic conditions, and infectious diseases. The details of the pre-employment/ re-engagement checks will depend on the industry, nature of work, and age of the employee.

Fitness to return to work examination

Workers returning to work after a serious illness or injury may pose a hazard to himself or others. Fitness to return to work is a medical assessment done when an employer wishes to be sure an employee can safely do a specific job or task.

Our Designated Workplace Doctor will assess the individual and take into account the job scope, industry, and individual medical condition. Thereafter, we will provide recommendations to the company. Such recommendations will include the suitability of the individual to return to work, as well as any changes or modifications to job scope necessary.

Statutory Medical examination

Under the Workplace Safety and Health (Statutory Medical Examinations) Guideline, workers exposed to certain health hazards during their work are required to undergo periodic medical examinations. This enables early detection of occupational illnesses and prevents excessive exposure of your staff to workplace hazards, thereby protecting from the harmful effects of the workplace hazards. These medical examinations can only be performed by Designated Workplace Doctors (DWDs) registered with the Ministry of Manpower. Acumed has experienced DWDs to conduct the tests and assess the workers.

The hazards requiring Statutory Medical Examinations include:

- Arsenic and its compounds

- Asbestos

- Benzene

- Cadmium and its compounds

- Compressed air environments

- Cotton

- Lead and its compounds

- Manganese and its compounds

- Mercury and its compounds

- Noise

- Organophosphates

- Perchloroethylene

- Free Silica

- Tar, Pitch, Bitumen, and Creosote

- Trichloroethylene

- Vinyl chloride monomer

If your employees are exposed to any of the above hazards, you are required to perform a pre-placement examination, as well as periodic screenings to monitor the health condition of your employees. More information on each of the hazards can be found here.

Hearing Conservation Programme.

Hearing conservation program (HCP) helps companies to manage the noise hazard so as to prevent Noise- Induced Deafness (NID) which is irreversible.

The components of the program include:.

- Noise surveys to identify noisy areas or activities.

- Implementation of noise control measure where feasible.

- Putting up signages on hearing protector usage in noisy areas.

- Conducting statutory medical examinations for all workers exposed to excessive noise.

- Providing suitable hearing protectors to all exposed employees.

- Educating and training all employees on the importance of adequate hearing protector usage, correct fit and proper maintenance.

Workers exposed to noise exceeding the permissible exposure limit and duration, as specified in the Workplace Safety and Health (Noise) Regulations 2011 are required to undergo periodic audiometric examinations.

Respiratory Protection Programme.

Toxic or harmful substances present in bags of dust, fogs, smokes, or fumes can enter the workers' bodies through inhalation. A respiratory protection program is important to prevent the exposure of workers to these airborne hazards.

This program involves:.

- regular environmental monitoring of the hazard.

- engineering control to reduce the hazard where practicable.

- selection and provision of suitable respirators.

- supervision to ensure proper fit and consistent usage.

- proper maintenance of respirators.

- training in the use and care of respirators.

- medical examinations for fitness to use respirators.

Accredited Designated Medical Examiners for Pilots.

Under the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) medical requirements, to apply for any of the CAAS flight crew licenses or air traffic controllers, the person must have a valid Medical Assessment of the relevant class. A Licensing Medical Examination (LME) can only be conducted by a Designated Medical Examiners (DMEs) appointed by CAAS.
