Top 10 most expensive houses in the United Kingdom

The UK has been riding the wave of a property boom for the last decade or so, and boasts some of the most expensive property in the world. London has been experiencing a massive property boom over the last few decades. Increased investment from abroad, notably Russian and Chinese investors, has driven many of the property prices sky high.

In addition, London (and to a wider extent the UK) is at a cultural and financial epicentre. Movie stars, billionaires, fashion executives – they all want to have a UK property to call home. This has also led to prices going through the roof. But it’s not just in the country’s capital.

Around the UK property prices have been breaking records. From the traditional charm of the Cotswolds to rural Sussex to Devon and Cornwall, records are being smashed all the time for property prices.

Another reason the UK is experiencing a property boom is the availability of housing stock. Britain was the driving force of the Industrial Revolution and possessed an empire at the dawn of the age of globalism. This brought vast swathes of wealth into the country from all four corners of the globe. Much of this wealth was spent on vast houses and country estates, as well as grandiose urban developments – much of which is still in an excellent degree of preservation.

The chance to live the life of a Victorian country squire or an urban captain of industry is enough to get people writing cheques for silly amounts.

As you can see, there are many reasons why property sells for astronomical figures in the UK. But what are the most expensive houses in the United Kingdom?

1. One Hyde Park

A three-floor penthouse suite of One Hyde Park became the UK’s most expensive apartment after it sold for £136.4 million in cash.

2. 18-19 Kensington Palace Gardens

The average price of homes on the road is around £18.2 million but number 18-19 is the cream of the crop, having been valued at £149 million.

3. Toprak Mansion

The twelve-bed mansion was built by Turkish industrialist and banker Halis Toprak but was sold in 2008 for £50 million to billionaire Hourieh Peramaa. However, it’s now valued at £105 million.

4. Witanhurst

After being empty for some years, this Georgian Highgate mansion was bought up in 2009 for £50 million. Further renovation work has pushed up the value to around £100 million.

5. Blenheim Palace

Home of the Churchill family, this UNESCO-listed property is almost impossible to value, but it easily makes this list.
