Judge Dredd: Mega-City One Is Ready to go Into Production, Delayed Because of COVID-19 Pandemic

It was recently announced that the world of Judge Dredd would continue on television in the form of a series. According to reports, this decision came after there was no confirmation on the sequel of the first installment of the film.

Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is currently Under Development

There was an announcement in recent times that Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is currently under development. According to reports, if everything works out, Karl Urban will reprise his role as the title character. Urban played the main character in the2012 feature film Dredd 3D. The movie failed to break-even or earn a profit because it only made a little over $35 million on a $50 million budget.

At this point, Rebellion, a British video game developer, has rights over the franchise. According to reports, Rebellion’s CEO Jason Kingsley stated that work is halted because of the coronavirus pandemic and everything will be back in place when it is entirely safe for everyone to step outside. Kingsley further added that if everything falls into place, then Karl Urban and Hollywood veteran actor Sylvester Stallone might return to the show.

According to reports, Kingsley said that he wants a sequel to the 2012 film Dredd 3D. He further added that since his company has the right, they have the liberty to make that happen. However, everyone has to wait to get back to work until the coronavirus pandemic is not over.

“We will begin production when it is safe for everyone to step outside”

The Rebellion CEO said that the pre-production stage for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is over. But the production cannot be started because of the ongoing public health crisis.

The iconic character was first brought to life by Sylvester Stallone in the 1995 feature film Judge Dredd. The character was inspired by 2000 AD comics.

According to reports, there is no official confirmation on which online video streaming platform will air the upcoming television series. It looks like it will be a battle between Netflix, AmazonPrime, or Disney+.

Judge Dredd: The “Street” Judge

Judge Dredd is a highly popular comic book franchise based on the longest-running comic strip in 2000 AD, a British weekly anthology comic. The comic book franchise revolves around the character of the same name. The character of Judge Dredd is a judicial and law enforcement officer in the dystopian city of Mega-City One. The city covers a significant part of the east coast of North America.

Judge Dredd is someone who has the power to arrest, convict, sentence, and finally execute criminals at any given point of time. The story of the “street judge” takes place in the year 2099. This is 122 years after the publication date of the comic book. The setting of the storyline is future earth which is plagued by a series of international conflicts. Most of the planet has turned into a complete radioactive wasteland. The human population has been huddled up in places known as Megacities. Megacity one is the world’s first megacity after it was formed by an urban sprawl rather than a deliberate design.

The coronavirus pandemic has bought the world to a complete standstill. No one knows when this nightmare will be over, and everyone will be back on their feet. Till then, all we can do is wait for productions to start and generate content that will be a treat for all fans soon.
