No Emmy Nominations for Outlander Season 5: Fans Are Not Happy

The list of nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards was released on the 28th of July and Outlander, along with many other deserving mentions was not on it. Outlander did receive a few technical Emmy nominations for its first four seasons, but none of them saw a win.

What Is the Show About?

The show based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling series is about a British nurse named Claire Randall who manages to fall 200 years through time and ends up in Scotland in the 1740s. At first, she thinks she has chanced upon a movie set as she finds herself in a forest with British soldiers battling a group of Scottish Highlanders. However, she is struck by reality as she hears the firing of real bullets. Claire is captured by the Scotts and taken to Castle Leoch where she makes quite a reputation as a healer. During her time at the castle, she makes various attempts to escape and find her way back to 1945.

Claire introduces herself as Claire Beauchamp (her maiden name), in an attempt to keep her reality. With time, she develops a liking for a Scottish man, James Fraser. She soon learns that James has been tortured by her husband’s ancestor, Captain Jack Randall, and starts to hear more about his reputation as a ruthless sadist. In the first season of the show, Jack Randall is the first person that Claire runs into after having traveled back in time. She is struck by how closely Jack resembles her husband, Frank Randall. However, she soon understands that physical appearance is the only thing that they have in common.

Circumstances bring Claire and James together as they are compelled to marry each other so that Claire can be saved from the clutches of Jack Randall. Though their marriage is born out of convenience, the episode ‘The Wedding’ shows their marriage and their very first night getting to know each other with beautifully raw emotion. It is undoubtedly one of the most sensual and bittersweet portrayals of a couple falling in love to ever be shown on screen. Their love and loyalty toward each other go on to be one of the biggest highlights of the show. Theirs is a romance that will not be forgotten.

Even as Outlander navigates through Claire and Jamie’s steamy romance, the growing tension between the Scotts and the British Crown continues to remain the main theme of the storyline. The show portrays the emotions of patriotism felt by the natives and their struggles in such a realistic manner that the viewer is completely absorbed into their lives.

Outlander is full of intensely graphic scenes, be it sensual moments of steamy romance or ruthless torture at the hands of Jack Randall. There are also some particularly intense scenes of sexual assault and bloody beatings that are not for the faint-hearted.

The cast has given an exceptional performance throughout the show. The beautiful Caitriona Balfe plays such a magnetic role as Claire Fraser that it’s impossible to take your eyes off her. Sam Heughan is an absolute favorite of the audience as James Fraser. Every single member of the cast has played an extremely convincing role in their respective characters. Tobias Menzies, as Jack Randall is one of the most convincing villains to ever be depicted in a TV show. After his initial few scenes, Jack Randall makes such an impression on the viewer that you will begin to have an automatic reaction of hate toward him the moment he makes an appearance or is even mentioned. The fear he instills in the heart of the viewer when it comes to the screen is commendable.

Even after the way that the show has won the hearts of many viewers, it is very disappointing to see that Season 5 didn’t even make it to the list of nominations for the Emmy. The earlier Emmy nominations that Outlander received were for production design in 2016, music in 2015, and costumes for both 2016 and 2018.

Why Didn’t Outlander Get a Mention?

Despite having everything that it takes to make a great show, why did Outlander not get a mention in the list of nominations for the Emmy? Fans have passed many comments on social media platforms accusing the board of partiality and giving more weight to the popularity of a show than it’s quality. Chris Albrecht, the former CEO of Starz, also seems to be of the opinion that the Emmy Awards are not a level playing field.

At the Golden Globes, however, Outlander is getting all the appreciation that it deserves. The show has also been renewed for a 6th season which is said to have 12 episodes. Caitriona Balfe also received four nominations at the Golden Globes. The show must go on, so don’t be disheartened yet. For those interested, the 72nd Emmy Awards can be watched on the 20th of September on ABC.
