Hypochondriac People and Covid-19

Hypochondria could be called as illness anxiety disorder which is characterized by fear of being ill with little or no physical symptoms. Just like in phobia, the irrational and absent symptoms or danger to one’s health is real for hypochondriac people. It is hard to convince them otherwise. Such people are obsessed with health and some go for tests and check-ups very frequently. Reasons for such behaviour are not easy to decipher yet there could be some precursors to the illness, such as:

  • Overwhelming anxiety in life
  • Child abuse
  • Other disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Covid-19 on the other hand, is an infectious disease that can have symptoms such as breathing problem, loss of sense of smell, fever or runny nose. It is a fact that some patients remain asymptomatic, while some even have mild flu like symptoms but even they are the carriers of the virus. In today’s world where there is ever growing panic among the masses over covid-19, hypochondriac people are likely to suffer more. The frequent washing of hands, use of sanitizers and masks, self-isolation, and social distancing can only lead to more anxiety and severity of hypochondria. Even normal people are going for testing in countries such as UK, the reports suggest that because of the frequent testing of healthy people, the infected people are being left behind i.e., they are not aware that they are positive because of the lack of opportunities of getting tested. The point is that when normal people can have anxiety in our times what about people with hypochondria? They must be facing huge psychological stress because of what is happening around the globe. The double anxiety of the hypochondriac people can generate many symptoms such as:

  • Fear to sit with people at home. Just in case someone might cough or sneeze and end up infecting them.
  • Fear to go outside especially students who formerly used to go to the libraries to seek assignment help or homework help or read books to get specific assistance such as management assignment help or science assignment help.
  • Repeatedly checking for body temperature.
  • Fear of even going to a doctor because what if they are positive.
  • Obsessive cleaning which is obviously more than normal people cleaning their hands during the pandemic.

However, there are steps which can ensure relief from such symptoms during the course of the current pandemic. Here are a few

  • Firstly avoid watching fake and pessimistic news.
  • Do Yoga and meditation as it helps to relax the mind.
  • Enjoy your hobbies while sitting at home in lockdown, read books, cook food, engage in gardening.
  • Don’t stop conversing with people about how you feel.
  • Avoid unnecessary health check-ups.
  • Move out of the home only when absolutely necessary, this will lessen the obsessive hygiene routine.
  • Develop a routine of eating and sleeping on time. Ensure a proper 8 hour sleep.
  • Join courses or classes online to keep yourself busy with.
