Photography - A Niche Hobby

Photography is defined loosely as the practice of creating durable images by recording light, either electronically utilizing an image sensor or chemically employing a light-sensitive material such as photographic film. It is engaged in many fields of science, manufacturing, and business and its more direct uses for art, film and video production, recreational purposes, hobby, and mass communication.

Photography has gained traction since the availability of DSLR cameras for relatively affordable prices, as they used to be very expensive at the time of their initial manufacturing. Many people take up this hobby as a profession since it contains no extra expenditure, and they can work at their leisure and earn a decent amount of money in the process. Consumers demand attention-worthy and eye-catching photographs. Sometimes magazines host many competitions to encourage amateurs and expert photographers to participate and win many prizes for their work.

Since the 1800s, when portable cameras with tripods were invented, outdoor photography became popular among veterans and newbie alike. Many of the travel photographs taken in the mid-1800s were recorded during scientific and exploratory trips, but they also created public interest in distant lands. Although cumbersome in the field, the collodion process produced good-quality images that were easily reproduced.

As tourism increased, so made the demand for pictures as souvenirs, and photographers began shooting for commercial reasons. Photo postcards became popular among the people. They used to send invitations and family photos for any festive events, as an invitation to attend them or preserve them for memories.

By the end of the 19th century, cameras with film rolls began to be mass-produced by Kodak. Standard cameras were sold with 2-3 rolls that came with them, and the photos got developed by studios accordingly. This process can make the people independent of taking their pictures while travelling and also recording memories for many events.

After the 20th century, Digital Cameras paved the way for more storage access since older cameras stored photos on film rolls. Since they finished pretty quickly after one or two shots, they had to be disposed of after the pictures were developed. Also, rolls used to be expensive according to the standards of those times. Digital cameras were hassle-free and stored the photos in a removable memory, which could be given for developing the physical copies of the pictures taken.

Nowadays, smartphone manufacturers embed cameras along with it, so users can have the luxury of taking photos with greater clarity than any cameras can ever take. This forced the camera companies to integrate with smartphone companies to integrate integrated hardware with a sophisticated camera and other specs on newer smartphones.
