1. Tanzanite

This prized gem which is only found in an area near the Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is available in different soothing shades of blue and violet colors. It was discovered in 1960 and since then it has been in the limelight. If it has a dark blue color organically then it is quite expensive because heat treating methods could improve the colors of gems.

2. Larimar

This stone is very rare and like Tanzanite it is also found in one area only and that is Dominican Republic. It is found in different colors like turquoise, white and dark blue and got popularity in the 1970s. A man known as Miguel Mendez named this stone as Larimar. By combining the first four letters of his daughter's name "Lari" from Larissa and Spanish title for Sea i.e., Mar, he created the word Larimar.

3. Grandiderite

This jewel is available all over the world, but its origin is from Southern Madagascar. A French mineralogist by name Alfred Lacroix found it in 1902 but it got entitled after the name of French explorer Alfred Grandidier. Grandiderite is very rare and precious if it is available in transparent form. A heavy budget is required to purchase this one of the world's exceptional stones.

4. Alexandrite

Do you know what makes this stone so unique? Its color changing quality makes it so different, it appears bluish green in sunlight and red purple in incandescent light. It was found in 1830 in the Ural Mountains in Russia. It was named after Russian tsar Alexander II.

5. Paraiba Tourmaline

Paraiba tourmalines were found in 1987 by a miner Heitor Dimas Barbosa. He had a belief that something is hidden beneath the hills of Brazilian state of Paraiba. His intuition was right and he became successful by finding a tourmaline of neon blue color. This gem is extremely rare and is most-demanded. In 2003, tourmalines having turquoise color were also found in Nigeria and Mozambique mountains, but not much like Paraiba Tourmaline.

6. Benetoite

Like some of the other precious gemstones, Benetoite is also found in one small area of California, which is near to the Benito River and that's why it is named as Benetoite. It got discovered in 1907 by a geologist known as George Louderback. It is of strong blue color and can only be mined in California.

7. Painite

It was found in 1951 by a British gemologist named Arthur Charles Davy Pain and became popular as a new mineral in 1957. For a long period of time, Painite remained as one of the world's rare stones by being available as the only crystal of red color. It was after 2004 when more painite stones were found and this led to diminish the scarcity of this gemstone.

8. Taaffeite

There is an Austrian-Irish gemologist by name Edward Charles Richard Taafe who purchased cut stones from Dublin in the 1940s. He was of the view that he bought a bunch of hard minerals. But, later on, he made them inspected upon which it was disclosed that these were actually gemstones. Since then, only a handful of these gemstones was found and its origin was found in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

9. Black Opal

In the family of gemstones, it is commonly believed that opal is of white or creamy color. As a matter of fact, this stone is also found in black color. It is unique as compared to the other opals and is usually found in mines in New South Wales in Australia. One of the renowned and precious black opals is Aurora Australis which was discovered in 1938.
